When his fiancée is brutally murdered on Valentine's Day, Ash Corvus is unwittingly plunged into the nightmarish world of the Arpadeem, or, as the movies call them...Vampires. What begins as a personal quest for revenge becomes a struggle for the fate of the city itself as Ash's search takes him into Cedar Rapids' secret criminal underworld. Ash must cast off his humanity and become a monster himself if he hopes to bring vengeance upon the monster who murdered his love...the man with the scar.

I need more!
Revisado: 02-19-25
I would not typically go for vampire novels, however, this book was recommended so I tried it. I'm glad I did! I enjoyed the characters, the story, the narrator, all of it and I was wanting more...but the story ended, leaving me wanting more! I'm ready for the next book to see what Ash and the others do next.

nails on chalkboard
Revisado: 07-16-24
The story was enjoyable enough but the narrator made it difficult to listen to. Over- enunciating letters and words...all characters sounded basically the same. Get past that and I enjoyed it.
I like this author as the story isn't full of foul language (not that I'm opposed to that) or extreme violence (again, not opposed). Nice to have a story I can listen to out loud without offending most others. Don't worry - I usually have headphones anyway.

Historia
Audie Award, Humor, 2016. In Furiously Happy, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

Waste of time
Revisado: 05-08-24
I found this to be a long rambling of stories randomly shoved together. I am not sure what the author was trying to accomplish. I didn't learn anything of value. The book was recommended to me so I suffered through it. I would not do that to a POW.

Historia
The author describes the experience of being in bombed-out, dangerous, post-war Nuremberg, where she lived for two years while working on the trial. This landmark trial resulted in the establishment of the Nuremberg Code, which sets the guidelines for medical research involving human beings. Doctors from Hell is a significant addition to the literature on World War II and the Holocaust, medical ethics, human rights, and the barbaric depths to which human beings can descend.

monotone
Revisado: 04-05-23
This book was hard to listen to, partly due to the topic but largely due to the monotone voice of the author/reader. While I didn't expect character voices, I found it hard to tell when she was talking about herself or the trials she reported. Overall, it was an interesting listen and I learned some things.

long but good
Revisado: 11-10-22
yes, it is a long listen. yes, the story likely could have ended earlier. however, I liked it. I enjoyed the detailed storyline of each character. I appreciate the thought that went into the back stories. there were twists and turns I didn't see coming.

Historia
The Long Night is Ernst Israel Bornstein's first-hand account of what he witnessed in seven concentration camps. Written with remarkable insight and raw emotion, The Long Night paints a portrait of human psychology in the darkest of times. Bornstein tells the stories of those who did all they could do to withstand physical and psychological torture, starvation, and sickness, and openly describes those who were forced to inflict suffering on others.

Wow. Should be required reading/listening
Revisado: 09-02-22
Extremely eye-opening. I honestly knew the basics of the Holocaust and had no idea of the number of camps nor the number of prisoners. I could not even imagine the tortures they went through. I am glad I chose this book as it is inspiring me to learn more.

Impressive tale!
Revisado: 01-19-21
Captivating story. Well told. Hard to stop listening. The author does an excellent job of creating the characters and their stories then blending them. The narrator was energetic and made each character a separate entity, which really enhances the story!
