Forgotten Cemetery
Revisado: 04-24-25
A group of young adults are bored with their routine of getting together to drink, eat and watch horror movies. So, they decide to delve into ghost hunting! What could possibly go wrong? Little do they know that their hometown is the site of a bizarre cult centered in the local Pioneer Cemetery! The story moves at a fast pace and there is plenty of horror and gore.
However, I did get a bit tired of the lengthy descriptions of their drives through town (maybe if I was a local to the area it would have been more enjoyable). Also, so many descriptions of what foods they ordered from the local eateries and what they were drinking every time they got together! Also, the ending felt a little rushed to me and not very believable.
The narrator did a good job and kept the story moving. All in all, a fun read, but I think it could have been better with more historical background. I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by this author.

Beyond Wicked
Revisado: 04-21-25
This is an interesting collection of short articles involving true crime cases through the ages. Some of these are truly horrific and give the reader pause at the true evil in some people. Many of the tales were new to me and a few I had read about before. This book (and others like it) give the reader a "just the facts" approach without a lot of embellishment. I find that this gives me the chance to research further into the stories that I find most interesting. The writing style is good and the authors have presented the crimes with a sympathetic point of view to the victims.
The narrator did a pretty good job, but there were several instances of mispronounced words (mostly town's names) and repeated sentences/phrases, A good editing of the finished audio would have been a good thing for this book.

Nineties Nostalgia and Metal Music
Revisado: 04-07-25
Relic Meyers loves metal music. Of course, he is the son of the drummer for metal band Unknown Oath! Relic is also a drummer and hopes to be as good as his Dad someday. However, his Dad disappeared years ago and nobody seems to know what happened to him.
When he discovers a lost demo tape, he doesn't realize that he might be unleashing supposedly forgotten horrors on his hometown when he plays the tape. Having disturbing dreams, showing his father trapped somewhere, constantly drumming, and hearing voices saying "Release Me" adds to his discomfort. Add in a couple of gruesome murders and a vengeful Widow and he soon finds himself in over his head.
This was a fun book, full of werewolves, vampires, ghouls and supernatural cults. Add in typical teenage angst, budding romance, and heavy metal and you have a great read. I would recommend this book to YA readers as well as those looking for nostalgic vibe from the 1990's.
The narrator did a great job and his performance brought this book to the next level. I look forward to further adventures with Relic and friends!

Totally creepy!
Revisado: 03-26-25
Torch is a totally creepy story revolving around the Baker family, Beauregard "Beau", Billy, and Mum. Beau is just trying to stay alive while serving his Master. But, his younger brother, Billy, has some strange habits that Beau has to clean up after.
Even though Beau is involved in some truly horrible events, I found myself feeling sorry for him. But, I also wanted to shake him for not getting out of a horrific situation. This story will definitely stick with me and probably haunt my sleep! Well-written, with engaging characters, it was a quick and terrifying story.
The narrator did a good job, but it took a bit to really get into her voice. Also, there was very little break between chapters on the audiobook, so you had to really pay attention if you wanted to stop listening at a chapter ending. All in all, I would definitely read more by this author.

Millie was excited that her dogs, Rosie and Daisy had been invited to a birthday party for a little wire-haired terrier named, Jillie. This was Millie’s chance to get to know the neighbors within her community. They’d been avoiding her ever since the body-in-the-bushes incident. It was as if the community believed she brought chaos to the complex, which Millie felt was ridiculous. She was anxious to prove them wrong. Trouble and mayhem did not follow her around, or did it?

Millie attends a Doggie Birthday Party!
Revisado: 03-26-25
This author has created a great cast of characters, both human and four-legged. Millie is trying to fit in at her new Condo complex after being involved in a murder mystery shortly after moving in. When she is invited to a doggie birthday party, she knows that her two pups, Rosie and Daisy, will have fun. And, maybe she will begin to get past the rumors her previous adventure stirred up.
Unfortunately, the birthday dog finds a gruesome treasure and Millie is once again looking for clues into a murder! Add in the fact that her best friend's ex-husband is visiting and has somehow become involved in the mystery and her on again/off again relationship with "Officer Hottie Pants" and you have a great story!
The narrator does a great job in bringing the fun to life and adds a lot to this one. If you enjoy a cozy mystery filled with great characters, a lot of humor, fun relationships and pets, you will enjoy this book (along with Millie's other adventures!).

Werewolves!
Revisado: 03-22-25
I am always on the lookout for great werewolf tales and this collection really fit the bill! From the very first story to the last, you will encounter plenty of gore and gruesome werewolf encounters. A few of the stories involve great scenes of revenge against a villainous character, which always makes for a great tale. These creatures aren't your cartoon variety but are truly horrific and will live in your nightmares.
The narrator was perfect for this collection and really brought these stories to life. If you enjoy a good werewolf tale, you will love this collection!

Real people against Zombies!
Revisado: 03-19-25
This book starts with a bang and never slows down! The author has created a great cast of characters who are just average people with a few skills that allow them to survive during the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse. The strong family ties are wonderful and realistic and I felt invested in the characters from the start. I love the fact that you have older people and disabled people in this book that are truly capable in the face of danger.
That being said, the author has no problem with unaliving people, even children, as the world faces this outbreak. There is plenty of action and just the right amount of gore that will satisfy the most hardcore zombie junkie. There is plenty of science and also great family dynamics and humor along the way to keep this one moving at a quick pace.
I enjoy books in the zombie genre and I'm always looking for my next fix. When I first started listening to the audiobook, I was reminded of the Still Alive series written by the late Javan Bonds (which is one of my favorites). I was happy to see the reference to his books in this one! Obviously, the author was inspired by Javan's books and I'm happy to be able to continue reading books written in that style.
The narrator is one of my favorites (especially in the zombie genre) and his performance keeps the book moving along and fits the book perfectly. So, if you've been looking for your next zombie fix, grab your favorite hot sauce and start reading!

This infamous duo carved out their place in American history stealing horses and cattle, and ingeniously robbing numerous banks, stagecoaches, and trains.

Butch and Sundance and Etta
Revisado: 03-17-25
I enjoy reading about outlaws from the Old West era and I also enjoy a good book with occult elements. So, this book is a perfect mix of the two.
Rumors have always flown around Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as far as whether they really died in Bolivia. This book weaves a unique tale about what actually happened to them.
The authors have blended historical facts with voodoo aspects, all told from the viewpoint of a young woman claiming to be related to Etta Place. The story flows well between the modern day and the past and the audiobook's use of two narrators makes this even better.
This was an enjoyable read/listen and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good western tale with a different twist.

Cooper Kane for the win!
Revisado: 03-17-25
I enjoy reading books in the zompoc genre and I'm always looking for new ones, especially those in a series. I think I have found my next favorite!
Cooper Kane is a typical twenty-something young man, confident, arrogant and full of himself. And, anybody with a name like that deserves to be a hero, right? But, then, the zombies arrive! The book is full of plenty of zombie action, a bit of humor and a religious cult! Don't forget the mushroom clouds and a pair of evil twins out to rule the world! What's not to love? There are also a few middle-aged characters that know how to kick ass, a geriatric man who might be a retired spy, and a father out for revenge. The characters are great and I enjoyed getting to know them.
The narrator did a great job and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for their next zombie fix!

Punching the clock as the sound guy on a haunted house documentary, and in the midst of a bitter divorce, Levon Stoll thought he’d hit rock bottom. But the job he took to pay the bills might just end up being the last one he ever has. Ghosts and ghouls are nothing compared to the horror that lurks inside the Demon House. Now he’s set in motion a series of events that not only puts himself and his loved ones at risk but could bring about the end times.

The Devil's Face
Revisado: 03-09-25
Christopher Artinian is one of my favorite authors in the zompoc genre, but he's also an overall great author and this book proves it. The first chapter is full on scary, with horrors that will stick with me for a long time.
The main part of the book follows Lev Stoll, a down on his luck sound guy going through a nasty divorce. He has been hired to work on a haunted house documentary, but he gets much more than he bargained for! The small town of New Scotland soon has to contend with the evil that is unleashed when Lev and his co-worker enter the local Demon House to start filming.
I enjoy the way that the author mixes horror with normal human interaction and this book has just the right amount of that. Great character development, from the teenager obsessed with Lev's rockstar friend, Jody, to Lev and his blossoming relationship with the local sheriff, you will come to view the cast of characters as friends, not just people in a book.
I especially enjoyed the characters of Tailin and Victor. Tailin is just a wonderfully weird woman with true knowledge of the Occult that has been unleashed. And, Victor's humorous use of weapons had me laughing out loud. Also, the bathroom scene with one character will truly make your skin crawl, so be warned!
The narrator, Kim Bretton, is also one of my favorites and her performance in this book will send shivers down your spine and make you look behind you as you listen. The extra sound effects are perfect and really added a lot to the book without being overdone.
Prepare yourself for some truly horrific moments, but also some very poignant ones as the characters deal with the Devil's Face. If you enjoy a well-written horror book with great characters and plenty of terrifying moments, you will enjoy this one.
