Exceptional
Revisado: 01-26-25
My first five star of the year. Exceptional wordsmith. An absolutely compelling story that jumps back-and-forth from the 1700s to the 1900s filling in historical gaps with both joy and loathing. This would be a definite reread for me possibly even this year. The last 30 minutes I found I needed to replay just to hear it again. The only hesitation I had was in the narration. Through most of the book the narrator seemed to speak in, almost a whispered tone that I didn't really enjoy when it became obvious. What a great book, what a great story, and an author I will look up again

Historia
President Bill Clinton's My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts, and his extraordinary capacity for hard work, to serving the public. It is the fullest, most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written, and a testament to the positive impact on America and on the world of his work and his ideals.

The Dog Ate My Homework
Revisado: 02-23-05
I have to admit, I wasn't a big fan of this former president. I just didn't get him, I mean... a picture of Elvis on the airplane? But after listening to this book, I have gotten to see him better and have decided that I was right. I don't get him. I tend to be drawn to biographies of people who have received public attention. Those we hear of and have formed strong opinions about. It is always fascinating to listen to a person describe their own strengths and weaknesses. The reason they write their biography is usually to take me into a side of their life I might not have seen and facts I might not have been privileged to. I really wanted to understand this man and the truths of his thought process and the whole Monica thing. Unfortunately, his book reveals him as a whiner and excuse maker. I did get a better sense of what he wanted to accomplish. The trouble is that he didn't do it. He didn't seem to give any good reason for the failure, except the press wouldn't listen to me. Isn't that akin to "The dog ate my homework"? I wasn't aware he had attended such prestigious schools; he doesn't seem to use those skills in public speaking situations. I got the impression that a major portion of the work was from a ghost writer. As a biography it did its job I think, showed me the man as he wanted to be remembered. It just a shame that the man didn't have more to make him memorable.

Like a Bag of Chips!!
Revisado: 02-23-05
With this much attention, I just had to listen and I'm very glad I did. This isn't my typical kind of read, but I found it a great distraction. A good, long listen that kept me driving and from doing other things. The story drew me in and kept me listening. I enjoyed all the seemingly factual references to known places and art work. I really felt it gave the book 'good bones' to stand on. Several references actually started me searching the internet for accuracy. Simply remembering that this is a work of fiction kept me from becoming emotional about any attack of church or religion. I did find the fiction addicting and plan on listening to the other book (Angels and Demons) by this author. I also commend the narrator for carrying a very long, accent ridden book so well. Some narrators become a third party to the story, this one did not. I guess the most important thing to remember is that it is FICTION and as much fun as a bag of potato chips. Not really great for the body, but a fun break once in a while and VERY addicting!!

A Slow Easy Holiday
Revisado: 02-14-05
This is a slow easy tale of a couple who purchase an old french property as a summer/holiday get away. Through the years, they face the rebuilding of the house and grounds while growing familiar with their neighbors and townsfolk.
While not a Peter Mayle fast paced journey, this is a nice soft diary of the process told in a slow, easy fashion. The style of the book doesn?t scream of a paid author who makes a living at writing, but more of a casual telling befitting a summer holiday.
I, in love with all things French, found it a sweet, slow diversion. Not at all unpleasant, but no major awards, this read would be best described as a lazy holiday. Just what the doctor ordered!!

Delighful Common Sence
Revisado: 02-13-05
Not what I had expected at first, this little book draws you in. The culture was refreshingly new, and made me search for other books covering life in Africa which are hard to find. The challenges Mma Ramotswe faces as she begins her new life are not that different than other women, those of love found and lost, career, and aloneness. But I was left with a sense of accomplished and determination that all things are possible if you will only persevere and belief. I would consider this more fictional biography than mystery and as such, a great essay into common sense and fairness.

A Grandmothers must have
Revisado: 02-13-05
I found this to be an enchanting Fairytale. The characters are charming and noble, the story is written in a way to cause suspense, and the morals true. Very delightful and inviting, this was a fun break from heavier books with a sweet light heartedness that appealed to me as an adult. I enjoyed the narrators style and learned a lot from listening to how he handled the various characters. After listening to this Newberry Medal author, I went right out and purchased the hard cover version to read aloud to my own grandchildren.

Delightful
Revisado: 02-13-05
What fun. This book sent be reaching for my travel planner and wishing I too could enjoy all the local festivals and food fairs deep in the French countryside. Peter Mayle writes with wit and joy as usual and lives the life I dream of. A great look into the little known side of the France I love and the food I crave. Mayle makes the simple life the French enjoy one to be craved. Tres Bon!!

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six. They were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry was thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future.

A great Listen
Revisado: 02-13-05
Some could consider this book hard to start, with the changing rhythm and timelines, but as a listener I became comfortable with the writing style quickly. I really enjoyed the pretense of the wife knowing her husband from her youth even though he didn't know her when he finally met her as a woman. The characters are endearing and the situations the main character finds himself in are amusing. This isn't a book with a deep life changing message, but rather one that draws the listener into a love affair between to somewhat ordinary people. A fun listen for sure.
