Historia
Beginning with the Renaissance, the culture of the West exploded. Over the next 600 years, rapid innovations in philosophy, technology, economics, military affairs, and politics allowed what had once been a cultural backwater left by the collapse of the Roman Empire to dominate the world. This comprehensive series of 48 lectures by an award-winning teacher and captivating lecturer will show you how - and why - this extraordinary transformation took place.

An Excellent Overview

Great series - comprehensive and inspiring
Revisado: 02-03-25
There's plenty of positives that can be listed about this course, but above all to me stands what was stated in the last chapter - the humility of the lecturer and the desire to be objective in listing the pros and cons of the dominant ideas throughout the history, while recognizing his own personal biases.

Historia
James Gleick, the author of the best sellers Chaos and Genius, now brings us a work just as astonishing and masterly: A revelatory chronicle and meditation that shows how information has become the modern era’s defining quality - the blood, the fuel, the vital principle of our world. The story of information begins in a time profoundly unlike our own, when every thought and utterance vanishes as soon as it is born.

Fascinating and increasingly relevant
Revisado: 12-11-24
This book made sense of a rather dull, technical subject. If you ever wondered what the nature of information is or how we got to our current state of being drowned in data, then this is the book for you.

Loved the format

This is how a subject needs to be taught in university - going from the roots in history and exploring each major idea without too much bias, so that a student is able to form an informed, independent opinion. Only pluralism allows this.

Historia
What does it take to be secure in our sense of belonging and self-worth? We may hustle to attain this security through achievements, meeting expectations, or repeating affirmations to ourselves - but Dr. Brené Brown's research has shown there is ultimately one obstacle to our sense of worthiness. “Shame is the barrier,” she teaches, “and building shame resilience is how we overcome it.”

Short and to the point
Revisado: 08-17-20
Loved the book for being concise, yet going into enough depth to feel meaningful. Listened to it in one go.
I liked the definitions and the important distinctions between concepts like shame/humiliation and empathy/sympathy that are not just pure semantics, but rather refer to much deeper emotional states that we could change in our own worlds once we are able to recognize and name.
