Historia
In his critically acclaimed Armageddon, Hastings detailed the last twelve months of the struggle for Germany. Here, in what can be considered a companion volume, he covers the horrific story of the war against Japan. By the summer of 1944 it was clear that Japan’s defeat was inevitable, but how the drive to victory would be achieved remained to be seen. The ensuing drama–that ended in Japan’s utter devastation–was acted out across the vast stage of Asia.

Do any civilians know how to pronounce common military term??
Revisado: 06-26-24
"corpsman" = kor- man, pl. kor-men.
it is NOT sounded like "corpse - man". Otherwise, an excellently written history of the years 44, 45. Elegant and smooth prose

Historia
William Blake's highly personal messages of humanity and social conscience are as relevant today as in 18th-century London. Although Blake's works were ignored or dismissed until long after his death, their directness and unsentimental simplicity will strike a chord with many today.

Brilliant poetry masterfully presented. The narrator read these memorable poems with precision cloaked by sincere sensitivity. Oh, that it were longer.

Historia
In this classic account of the French war in Indochina, Bernard B. Fall vividly captures the sights, sounds, and smells of the savage eight-year conflict in the jungles and mountains of Southeast Asia from 1946 to 1954. The French fought well to the last, but even with the lethal advantages of airpower, they could not stave off the Communist-led Vietnamese nationalists, who countered with a hit-and-run campaign of ambushes, booby traps, and nighttime raids. Defeat came at Dien Bien Phu, in 1954, setting the stage for American involvement and opening another tragic chapter in Vietnam's history.

will we never learn?
Revisado: 04-17-15
We are, sadly, repeating the mistakes of the Vietnam war in the Middle East - i.e. seeking a military solution to a political dilemma. Our officers in Iraq should have been reading STREET WITHOUT JOY instead of SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM!

Historia
This production of Hamlet, directed by Sir John Gielgud and starring Richard Burton, was recorded in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, and with the actors performing just as they would if you went to see a production tonight. "The particular intensity and nerves of this is probably the same kind of thing that excites an audience in live theater," says Richard Burton.

THE Hamlet performance
Revisado: 04-13-11
Burton's performance (and the rest of the cast) make the Olivier Hamlet seem like a long boring sermon. The sound is that of a relic from the 1960's and isn't that bad for all that. We might as well complain that the Book of Kells illuminator sometimes colored outside the lines or that a painting isn't as precise as a photograph. I had it in an LP (if you remember what those were) and in a video, but the sound recording is the absolute best. When it's over, I start it again because without it, of course, "... the rest is silence."
