The story is... a neat idea. But to have this immense spiritual world Anne has created, with it's spirits, demons, good vs evil; boiled down to some half baked science concepts is disappointing. It feels like Anne no longer loves her creation and writes as though the original spiritualism and brushes with religion is now offensive or wrong. So she has gone in to retcon some of the Abrahamic religious legend out of it. I respect people change and good for her if she is happy, but maybe should have called Blood and Gold the end and gone on with what she prefers to work on.

I love this series despite it's continuing problem with the main plot. Not only has it never made plausible sense but this book took a bit of extra time out of its day to really ramp it up into a textbook case of reinforced mass delusion. Despite that, a lot of this book follows the formulas we know and love, with some refreshing alternate perspectives thrown in. Those alternate perspectives are the one thing that makes this book worth reading. My biggest beefs are the main protagonist himself and the seemingly hastily thrown together cliff-hangar ending. I really enjoyed Bishop's growing maturity, science savvy , and leadership skills in books 7 and 8. I looked forward to seeing the shock of the last book push Bishop into his prime, but instead, this book made a concerted effort to regress him again and I actually found him to be increasingly unlikeable. The ending? The author has much to answer for this time.

I'm not sure why I continue to read this other than to hope McGill will some day get promoted over the nonsense or defect. If really broken down, this is terrible sci fi. Yet I keep reading because there is so much potential here if the author would just slow down and do some proper character building. I see comparisons to diGris, but I'm not seeing it. But the potential to draw close to that cult classic series is there. But for now, characters are too 1 dimensional and the whole series is stuck in a rut. McGill's womanizing would be as entertaining as diGris' if the women actually brought something to the table besides dim witted jealousy and cookie cutter personalities. McGill's arch nemesis is stuck with the same scripted dialogue of 5 or 6 lines he's been using since he was introduced. Leadership moves from one contrived blame game to the next without an ounce of suspension of disbelief.

But I keep reading... It's time for McGill to take over or go freelance, because this stick has been stuck in the mud for too long.

Mark, by the way, is awesome at narrating this series. Nearly every character is given their own voice so you always know who is talking without needing a cue.

I have loved this series for years in book form, however by the second book of the Audible release, I have come to regret my purchase. I thought if I listened long enough I would be able to adapt, but I can't. Simply put, the narrator is the wrong voice and more so, the wrong gender for this series. The entire narrative of the series unfolds through the eyes of the young male warrior, Vanye. It's his thoughts, his perspective, and his observations. There is only one other character point of view later in the series and he is also male. As such, it would have been more appropriate to have a male narrator of a timbre able to convey as a young man. To have Vanye's story told in a fast paced, child-like, female voice has proven to be too distracting for me to finish.

This book is probably my second favorite of this series as it doesn't get mired in the not so well thought out scientific concepts found in the other books. It's a pure and enjoyable romantic tale set in Samaria with second coming of age tale woven through. That said, I find the ending far too abrupt. It could have used a couple more chapters to put a more satisfying cap on Obadiah and Rebbeca's story.

I've enjoyed the series until about midway through the book. Up to the midway point, McGill's unorthodox methods are an asset a he shows moments of out-of-the-box brilliance., beginning to earn the respect of those around him without sacrificing the fact he still ruffles feathers. After that, however, McGill's antics move into the realm of the ridiculous to the point of feeling tired and wrung out. Suspension of disbelief is gone and one starts to sympathize with leadership's assessment as his actions change him into a character no different than his two principal nemeses. The book's antagonist was decent in Tech World, but in this book he is entirely unbelievable and contrived. Finally, I didn't think it possible, but the women and sometimes-friend Carlos are even more 2 dimensional than before. Carlos was probably my biggest disappointment as he started showing some promise and maturity in McGill's charge. Then as quickly he was relegated back to simpleton bio-fodder. I haven't quite given up on this series but it really needs to get back to the promise dangled in front of us in the first chapters of this book. McGill needs to get back to his own methods and stay out of the villain's bag of tricks. Secondary characters need an intelligence boost and dialogue that doesn't immediately devolve to McGill's sex life. It also wouldn't hurt for McGill's unit to be fleshed out beyond just Carlos.
