Historia
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust. Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

Cool world, romance and story logic lacking
Revisado: 04-24-25
The world is still cool but the romance is just soo repetitive and the logic of the story often makes you wanna pull you hair out

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Great and cute story, great narrator

Funny and very creative. Only disclaimer is that it’s YA so expect some of the caveats associated with that. But I barely noticed.

Historia
The Red Queen is old but the kings of the Broken Empire dread her like no other. For all her reign, she has fought the long war, contested in secret, against the powers that stand behind nations, for higher stakes than land or gold. Her greatest weapon is The Silent Sister - unseen by most and unspoken of by all. The Red Queen's grandson, Prince Jalan Kendeth - drinker, gambler, seducer of women - is one who can see The Silent Sister.

great writing&narration, OK story
Revisado: 06-12-22
loved this author's other series so gave this a try. The writing is great, as with his other books, and the narrator does a great job. The story has many cool aspects but in the grant scheme of things I was a bit disappointed how predictable it was. If you have read a few other fantasy books you see most of the stuff here coming from a few miles away.

great reader, decent story with cool fights
Revisado: 07-05-21
great listen if you are looking for lots of magic slinging and aren't hoping for massive depth. The story is pretty standard and somewhat predictable, even though it does a good job and surprising small twists. I get the feeling that the story wouldn't hold up to a lot of scrutiny but that's OK.

A forced-feeling sequel, barring that its OK
Revisado: 01-23-21
The first book was amazingly creative and tantalizingly realistic. The sequel reminds me of so many bad Holywood sequels to great first movies. The first few chapters desparately try to turn the happy ending of book 1 into a new storyline . Starting with the title of the book it is incredibly cringy. If you manage took get past this it is pretty much an exact replica of the story in book 1, so it is OK to just consume without much thought.
Another big issue of this sequel is that a lot of things just make no sense. In line with the feeling that this is a money-oriented sequel, a lot of events feel like the author/publisher didn't care enough to take the time and polish the story/worldbuilding.
In summary: read if you are the type who is ok with sequels that dont fully live up to the first instance and can overlook cringe and inconsistencies.

great setting, OK story
Revisado: 10-27-20
I liked this books right up until it becomes clear why the bad guys acted as they did. It makes absolutely no sense to me. So if you can live with a somewhat weak explanation for why stuff happens, the storyline is enjoyable. Narrator is amazing.

good writing, great narrating, OK story
Revisado: 09-12-20
It's well written, and it is set in an interesting world. The storyline is very predictable and - worse - there are many things that just make no sense and characters act in really cliche-type manners. Think main character storming off alone without informing allies into an obviously dangerous situation without any reason to do so.
