Historia
When a grisly murder occurs on the Isle of Lewis that bears similarities to a brutal killing on the mainland, Edinburgh detective Fin Macleod is dispatched to the Outer Hebrides to investigate, embarking at the same time on a voyage into his own troubled past. As Fin reconnects with the people and places of his tortured childhood, the beautiful island and its ancient customs once again begin to assert their grip on his psyche. Every step toward solving the case brings Fin closer to a confrontation with the dark events of the past that shaped - and nearly destroyed - his life.

Definetly wrong category
Revisado: 12-04-20
I wanted to like the book, but expecting a murder mystery/police procedure, and what I ended up with, was most disappointing. If you approach the book as a novel then it would be a decent book...not great but decent. The murder ends up being secondary to the back stories of the various characters...The author writing style again, is not great. I find it lacking in sophistication . Gives nice but not great descriptions of the various people and places in the story After i finished the book i went to a Rebus book by Ian Rankin and a book by Lawrence Block and immediately saw the sophistication in writing and plot development that The Black House lacked.
The Blackhouse is the first in a trilogy and I hope the next 2 books are better than the 1st

Historia
Battling the bottle one day at a time, ex-cop, sometime PI Matthew Scudder finds that next to staying sober, staying alive seems easy. But in the mean streets of New York City it never is. Not for the prostitute who wanted out and got her beautiful self slashed to ribbons. Not for a pimp named Chance who is betting his life that the broken-down detective can find her murderer. And not for Matthew Scudder - just trying to stay alive in a city that knows nothing better than how to die.

Revisado: 02-21-16
What made the experience of listening to Eight Million Ways to Die the most enjoyable?
Two great story lines going on at the same time. Both story lines deal with human emotions and frailties . Block has created a captivating novel that tugs at your heart strings and emotions. His best work in the series to date.
What does Lawrence Block bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
It is his story. He knows how it is supposed to sound and does a great job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I had the time ..Definitely
Any additional comments?
A must read !!!

Criss...Cross.....Double Cross Who can you Trust
Revisado: 09-15-14
What did you like best about The Big Goodbye? What did you like least?
The least enjoyable aspect of the book was the resolution of the conflict. Given the information in the book, there was no foreshadowing of the person responsible, thus creating who antagonist who was not plausible. The denouement was extremely well done !
Would you be willing to try another book from Michael Lister? Why or why not?
After the resolution of this book, I would hesitate to buy another of his works
What three words best describe Allen Walker’s voice?
He spoke to quickly which detracted greatly from the story, although his words are very clear.
Do you think The Big Goodbye needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
yes . The denouement leads to a sequel very easily.
Any additional comments?
When I am in doubt whether a mystery is well written I refer to my 12 criteria of a good mystery novel.. This book fails on 2 key points. 1) It must baffle a seasonably intelligent reader, and 2) the solution must seem inevitable once revealed. There was no way these 2 criteria were met. The person responsible came out of left field. Very disappointing ending, but otherwise a decent read

the insight that Chaze has into the human psyche. He understands what makes human tick. His story is a study in human frailties.

Raw.......Gritty......Steamy... A Classic !!!!
Revisado: 08-21-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Fast paced, extremely well written, managing to inter-twin 5 stories and have them all come together at the climax
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
a good plot has you anticipate what will happen and therefore keep you reading to see if you are correct. This book does it in spades !!
What about Mike Dennis’s performance did you like?
Mike does a great job of not overplaying the parts, especially the women's voices. His inflections are easily matched up with the various characters. His short staccato reading of the sentences gives the book the noir feeling perfectly.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes...I finished it in 3 sittings, a personal best .
Any additional comments?
hard hitting , brutal at times, but no over descriptive gore scenes. The reader is left to fill in the blanks. The climax and then a quick Hitchcock ending, no extended denouement.
