In the early stages There was a lot of trivial detail in the early stages and it felt like the story stalled or rather moved forward at a snail's pace but as the plot unfolded the tempo picked up. It was not obvious to me how or where the breakthrough would be made and it kept my attention as I waited for any clues to be revealed. The use of religious extremism to hide the evil actions of church leaders, was a stroke of genius. The idea that devoted followers would do almost anything in the name of faith, is plausible and created a challenge for our detectives.

Good story

None of the twists or turns in this book are ridiculous or outlandish and that makes it enjoyable. One decision by Molly the maid midway through the story was out of character and it stood out for me after the time spent in the earlier part of the book building up the robotic character. It did not fit but appears a conscious decision by the author to allow the story to unfold in a certain way. A similar uncharacteristic decision is revealed at the end and it is the reason for this 4 star rating.

Delightful debut

From the beginning of the book, you know that will end with the details regarding the murder. Context is required before the climax and this is usually the make or break for similar plots. The detail should not bore and the pace should not drag in order to keep the reader / listener interested. The author did a good job to keep me interested and the story does pick up in pace towards the end. Despite working out who was involved before it was revealed in the book, there ending was still a mystery to me. There are no negatives for me, which is positive.

Enjoyable

I was convinced I knew the killer until the latter part of the book. It was well narrated and the story had a good tempo. It lacks the character depth of other novels but that works here as it is not really relevant to the story and since this is the first book, I assume the rest will come over time. An enjoyable listen.

Surprisingly good

This audiobook was recommended but it still exceeded my expectations.

I was expecting the status quo to resume but the longer the book went on, the more I questioned what could happen in a short space to change fate.

The outcome was never in doubt but the ending was surprising.

A decent listen

I was hesitant to purchase this book as I was unsure how different it would be from the popular DC Smith series.
It is not the same and that, in my opinion, is great.
The story is well thought through and the only issue I had were the few bits of humour which in some instances detracted from the moment.
No over the top Hollywood movie style heroic scenes, just a really good story.

I read about this book and it definitely lived up to my expectations.
The narrator's tone and tempo were fantastic.
I will now go look for earlier books in this series.

Underwhelmed

This book is highly rated but didn't live up to my expectations.
I pushed through the first part, fighting off the urge to hit stop.
Some of the dialogue is poor and unnecessary.
The latter part of this book is very good.

This was an excellent first book in the now famous series. So layered and interwoven with nuch of the pleasurable listen is down to Sean Barrett and his narration of Jackson Lamb.

Enjoyable listen

A really easy listen as the story built up with flashbacks to provide background. I paid attention and was unable to determine the what happened to the missing colleague. No B rate action movie dialogue or over the top climax in these pages .
