Historia
The Yellowstone super-eruption has put an end to modern civilization. As cities and countries continue to fall, the colony of Rivendell in the alternate Earth known as Outland looks more and more like the only real hope for humanity. But life in Rivendell isn’t getting any simpler, either. Bill and Kevin continue to discover new worlds; the population continues to rise; winter is approaching; and everyone has their own opinion about how things should be run.

Good escapist story, literally and figuratively
Revisado: 11-02-23
Fun variant on the "Beam me up Scotty, this planet stinks" theme. Main characters are interesting and rather well developed. The way people interact in this story is sufficiently realistic imho, although somewhat caricatural at times. The voice actor is Good.
I don't particularly subscribe to current US progressive white liberal beliefs and attitudes but these are well portrayed in the story, which is perfectly OK taking into account that most of the characters are from that background. However, while it is perfectly OK for people in a story not to be be politically neutral, it's less OK to have the world (in this case the alternate timelines) also not be politically neutral. Unfortunately in this story, all the alternate Earths where humans are (or were) involved fall into specific bingo card boxes of current white liberal Americans' preoccupations: Nazi USA, GreenHouse Earth and Natives USA. Could have been much worse however and I thank the author for not including 'Slavery USA', and 'Utopia DEI commie USA'.

Good ideas but...
Revisado: 09-24-22
Good ideas, but filled with high-school level girl-perspective interpersonal drama, from the pervy protagonist, the female rival who is taken out in a highly public verbal showdown, the victimhood from colleagues who then profusely apologize, etc. Not my bag of tea. The narrator is merely reading the text, with minimal attempts at changing the voice for different characters.

Historia
In this highly informative and entertaining book, the founder of the vibrant new field of evolutionary consumption illuminates the relevance of our biological heritage to our daily lives as consumers. While culture is important, the author shows that innate evolutionary forces deeply influence the foods we eat, the gifts we offer, the cosmetics and clothing styles we choose to make ourselves more attractive to potential mates, and even the cultural products that stimulate our imaginations (such as art, music, and religion).

Illuminating and entertaining.
Revisado: 01-28-20
Society being downstream from biology, it makes total sense to consider the constraints of our evolutionary (pre)history on our behaviors, either as individuals or as groups.

Best-selling science fiction superstars Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle combine their talents with those of Steven Barnes in an extraordinary adventure of humankind’s first outpost in the farthest reaches of space. Light years from Earth, colonists land on a planet they name Avalon. It seems like a paradise—until native creatures savagely attack. It will take every bit of intelligence, courage, and military-style discipline to survive.

Historia
For generations, the solar system—Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt—was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark. Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core.

Very good except the cheezy bits
Revisado: 07-13-19
Excellent overall. The end was somewhat predictible, but the storytelling was pretty good nevertheless. The grand science fiction background idea is breathtaking. What got on my nerves is the main 'human interest' (woman preacher with homosexual & interracial relationship), which was over the top cheezy, as if the author wanted to check all the PC boxes at the same time, and especially the names of the people involed (Anna, Nono & Namey - OMG the softness of the Ns).

Informative
Revisado: 10-16-16
Nice tour of the topic which, for me, is an update. I understand that biological anthropology, as a course given to university students, can benefit from being articulated with the specific cultural climate of our time and place(s), but I was a bit annoyed by the space taken up by the Professor's own ideological posturing. This was most prominent in chapters 14&15 (gender issues) and in chapter 19 (racial issues). That being said, Prof. King did manage to contain the damage; while these topics were not treated with all the objectivity one would expect from a scientist, it could have been much worse.
