Historia
In the ancient city of Nineveh, on the bank of the River Tigris, King Ashurbanipal of Mesopotamia, erudite but ruthless, built a great library that would crumble with the end of his reign. From its ruins, however, emerged a poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh, that would infuse the existence of two rivers and bind together three lives. In 1840 London, Arthur is born beside the stinking, sewage-filled River Thames. With an abusive, alcoholic father and a mentally ill mother, Arthur’s only chance of escaping destitution is his brilliant memory.

Beautiful, Haunting Tales Deftly Woven
Revisado: 03-27-25
The author’s care and skill, as well as her deep research, make this work a painful pleasure to read. I greatly appreciate her note, which lists sources, influences, and liberties taken for the flow of her fictional narrative. A masterpiece to lead readers craving more reading on the region, the matter of museum “ownership,” epics like Gilgamesh, women in war, the fragility of histories of peoples and cultures at the hands of aggressors, and water.

Sweet and Nostalgic
Revisado: 02-26-25
I have always loved these stories. My mother read them to me and I read them to my son. There is comfort in having Judi Dench et.al. perform them, now that my mom is no longer living.

Sensitive and Important
Revisado: 02-21-25
How is it that the natural bond between mother and child is admired, taken as a given, and completely reasonable except for unwed mothers in a pre Roe v. Wade America? Sadly, the deep relevance of this book has come back around.

Excellent
Revisado: 02-27-24
This brought back so many memories from my childhood and the confusion over what was happening in Vietnam, why we were there, and the division in our country. In an odd way, it gives me hope that we can overcome our current division. But truth matters. Talking about it matters. Listening matters.

Historia
Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

OUR Town
Revisado: 09-18-23
Bringing Thurber to us again. Bringing rural life in America to city dwellers. Bringing us all full circle. If you are young when you read this, pull it out again when you have children, or when you’ve made the choice not to. Pull it out again when you - or your friends - have grandchildren. Like Our Town, Tom Lake is a story for the ages - for all the ages. Thank you, Ann Patchett. Thank you Meryl Streep. Thank you James Thurber.

Historia
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

The story is engaging and the characters believable. The relationships are complex and messy - as in life. Whether for poor, working women or for women of wealth and leisure, life is hard.
