Historia
He gave his word, refused to break a vow, and lost his one chance at true love. Now they've come for his land. Hap Wilkes is a man facing a painful past, an increasingly uncertain future, and now fights with everything left in a broken and failing body, to keep the one thing still left to him - his pride. The Irish Cowboy is a story of loss, secrets, redemption, and the always present human yearning for love and forgiveness, and marks the most personal novel to date from best-selling author D.W. Ulsterman.

Very dramatic. Very soap-operaish. Clearly should be made into a movie. Hollywood would love this!! Me? Not so much. The horrible raspy voice of the lead character is HORRIBLE! Glad I only spent $1.98.

Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

A long slog without a payoff
Revisado: 10-18-18
I had heard this book very positively reviewed by several people but I found the whole thing very unsatisfying. One depressing story after another with none brought to resolution, There are lots of time shifts which in an audio book are hard to follow. All in all, blech!

In this intimate, haunting, literary memoir read by the author, an American icon tells her story for the first time, in her own gorgeous words - about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

Maybe I was expecting a steel magnolia
Revisado: 09-24-18
What Sally should have done was write this book and then put it in a desk drawer. I'm sure this was cathartic for Sally but it just got too whiney and self-consumed for my taste. There are some parts that are somewhat humorous i.e. her tale of The Way West but everything else in her life seemed so fraught. She talks about all the laughing she did but shares very few tales for the reader to laugh with her.
Then she should have written a whole new book for publication that has more of a steel magnolia vibe, some humor and a much lighter touch.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Revisado: 09-18-18
This book wrapped me in its literary arms from the beginning. Well developed characters populate this book. Be sure to listen to the author's note in the last chapter. He tells how the basic framework evolved and developed. This book is very atypical for this author but very very good.

Sad teenager...Demented kidnapper...Bad marriages
Revisado: 07-31-18
Yuck! Two hours into this book I just wanted it to go away. Here is one device authors use that I do not like: getting into the mind of the perp and the whole drama of girls/women being held and abused. I really like mysteries where we really don't know what happened to the victim.
Now if I can find the place on Audible's site to return it?!

Believe it or not you will root for the perps
Revisado: 01-13-18
Silence has a very intriguing and complex plot and I binged on it. This is the only book I have ever read in which I was rooting for the perps as well as the good guys. That takes clever writing and makes me want to read more of Thomas Perry's books. However I certainly could have done with a bit less back story on the main characters. To me the backstories were the slowest parts. But I loved the ending! Perfect!
This book was recorded in 2007 and yet to this Californian's ears I had some real problems with Kramer's pronounciations of streets/towns. I cannot not believe that Tantor Media did not redub the mispronunciations of the reader. Here is the list of mispronounced streets/towns:
La Cienega (C-N-ega accent on "N")
Sepulveda (Sa-pull-va-da accent on "pull")
San Rafael (he did get it right once--San Rafell--but wrong about every other time)
Simi (seamy)
San Luis Obispo (San Lewis A-bispo).
I realize that most people live in areas without Spanish names but if you are a reader for a book set in California you might want to bone up on pronunciations.

Loved, loved, loved this book
Revisado: 01-29-17
This book robbed me of half of a night's sleep. I had started the book. It was 2 am and I decided to listen for "just an hour." Then I had 4 more of those hours, then got up and finished the book. I laughed occasionally, wept ALOT and had to ice my eyes to try to get rid of the puffiness!
A day later I listened again to parts during which I may have nodded off and missed. I love the way the romance built and the 4 voices were terrific.

Scottoline's BACK with a humdinger
Revisado: 08-16-16
The plot here is so heart-rending that I tear up just thinking about Part 1 of the story. Any author that can make me care that much about a fictional character, is a master indeed. She also had me rooting in the court room scenes (and please, attorneys, don't burst my bubble by telling me how unrealistic it might be)
This would be a wonderful book club book especially if there are attorneys in the book group. Kate Burton (daughter of Richard, right?) does a very good job. Jennifer LaVoy of book 1 was called on to do a far broader range of characters which she did masterfully. But Burton does everything the book calls for very well.
I love you Lisa Scottoline!

Not nearly as good as Accused
Revisado: 08-16-16
This book is written in the voice of an associate, Judy at Rosato & DiNunzio the all-female law firm and the subplot continues from Accused, book no 1 in the series. The narrator is not even in the same league as book no 1 AND in fact, Scottoline uses the exact same plot device at the climax of this book as she used in book 1. I swear I could copy and paste a line out of book 1 and out of book 2 and they would be identical.
There is a subplot that has to do with coping with breast cancer and all its attendant therapies, misconceptions about attitude's role in healing (bottom line: attitude does NOT affect healing-see American Cancer Society page on this) and ideas about "fighting" cancer. It makes me wonder if Scottoline was undergoing treatment while writing this book. "Chemo brain" might well have caused her to forget that she had just used the same plot device in book 1. ( am not being sarcastic here but simply trying to figure out why the slip by this fabulous author,)
What's good: surprise villain, great characterizations and a oh so intriguing ending.
