Historia
In the dark waiting room of the ferry terminal in the sketchy Spanish port of Algeciras, two aging Irishmen - Maurice Hearne and Charlie Redmond, longtime partners in the lucrative and dangerous enterprise of smuggling drugs - sit at night, none too patiently. It is October 23, 2018, and they are expecting Maurice's estranged daughter, Dilly, to either arrive on a boat coming from Tangier or depart on one heading there. This nocturnal vigil will initiate an extraordinary journey back in time to excavate their shared history of violence, romance, mutual betrayals, and serial exiles.

Waiting for Dilly
Revisado: 04-04-25
Night Boat to Tangier has a Waiting for Godot vibe but there’s more to the story which is revealed as the two men reminisce while waiting for the girl. I like the repetition of some of the descriptive phrases such as the information booth and the ferry terminal.
Much is revealed as the men wait and I found the characters sympathetic even though it’s clear they’re criminals and mentally unstable. I particularly liked the ending
I’m glad I listened to this rather than read it. Hearing the Irish accent was important for me

Historia
When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn’t believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee. Margaret is not most people. Margaret is staying.

Not your usual haunted house
Revisado: 09-09-24
Thoroughly enjoyed this fresh take on the haunted house story. The narrator, Margaret, is a middle aged woman who loves her house and has learned to accommodate its ghosts. She isn’t afraid, though she is horrified. Complications occur when her daughter visits in September, the month that the house is at its worst.
The narrator was excellent and I will look for more books narrated by Kimberly Farr.

Historia
In Lisbon in 1904, a young man named Tomás discovers an old journal. It hints at the existence of an extraordinary artifact that - if he can find it - would redefine history. Traveling in one of Europe's earliest automobiles, he sets out in search of this strange treasure. Thirty-five years later, a Portuguese pathologist devoted to the murder mysteries of Agatha Christie finds himself at the center of a mystery of his own and drawn into the consequences of Tomás' quest.

SLOW beginning
Revisado: 07-24-24
My only previous experience with Yann Martel’s writing is Life of Pi, a book I liked very much. This book has some of the same hallmarks such as the reader’s uncertainty of what is real and what isn’t, and that is what I like about High Mountains. The book is structured as three related stories, each taking place in a different time period. Unfortunately, the first story, which is essential to the structure,is SO long and slow, I nearly gave up. Fortunately, the second story is very good and contains the elements of Martel that I like. The last story brings everything together and I found myself wanting to know how this ending would be interpreted by the village.
I gave the book 3 stars because of the first part that I slogged through.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Marvelous Meryl
Revisado: 05-31-24
I swore off Ann Patchett after I read State of Wonder and it was only Meryl Streep narrating that enticed me back. And I am glad. The narration was a wonder. I couldn’t wait to find time to listen. I loved the story and the way the novel was constructed around “Our Town.” Maybe people who don’t know the play wouldn’t find this novel so entrancing, but I feel like I found a real gem. It also makes me sad that high schools in my city no longer teach “Our Town”. What a shame.

I wasn’t sure about this story at the beginning, but it didn’t take long for the interesting characters and excellent narration to win me over. By the end, I wanted to hear more about each of the characters and was sorry the book was over.
This narrator was new to me and now I will search out his books. Very talented.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Best I’ve listened to in a long time
Revisado: 10-16-23
This audiobook was in my library for months before I finally got around to it. Now I tell everyone about the book and encourage them to listen rather than read. I don’t know when I’ve heard such a talented narrator men, women, young, old, black, Italian,Irish, Hispanic-every accent is perfect and every character distinct. And I cared about every character. Good story. Good writing Great ending.

Just OK
Revisado: 10-05-23
I though the narrator was terrific with dialogue and the portrayal of the various characters. His phrasing, however, interfered with my enjoyment of the book. His slight pauses, even in a simple sentence, made his delivery choppy to my ears. I probably won’t listen to another book with this narrator.
The story was an interesting take on the premise of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and though I listened to the entire thing, it’s not a book I would tell others they should read.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Good story, mediocre narrator
Revisado: 04-07-23
The previous Ann Patchett book I had read was a dud and for awhile I thought this was a dud too. The narrator could not bring me into the story. Tom Hanks was just Tom Hanks reading a story. About halfway through, the narration improved as the main character aged. Many terrific narrators have kept me listening to a mediocre story, but in this case, the good story helped me tolerate the mediocre narration. And it is a good story, though I had my doubts at first. The last chapters bring the story to a beautiful closure and it is in these chapters that the narrator is at his best.

Excellent story for young readers
Revisado: 06-11-22
This book has sat in my library for so long, I can’t even remember why I was interested in it. But I’m glad I finally got around to it. It was a nice change of pace for an adult,, but it will be an excellent library addition for the second and third graders. The narrator is just right, and the plot involves orphans, a boarding school, and a genie! Plenty of twists and turns will keep just about any child interested. And, of course, the young heroine learns valuable life lessons. I can imagine the delight this story will bring

Good narrator, mediocre writing
Revisado: 05-08-22
This was my first Kristen Hannah book and perhaps I chose unwisely. I know that The Nightingale was very popular. This book, however , struck me as a young adult fiction and I wasn’t expecting that. The entire time I listened I kept thinking I should really return the book but the narrator kept me going. The narrator handled all the characters brilliantly. The heart of the book is the part in California but there was way too much story before that. I also dislike contemporary language inserted in period pieces. For example, did women in the 1930s really say things akin to “I got you girl “?
So, I will not listen/read another Kristin Hannah but I will listen to more Julie Whelan.
