Historia
Long before she was a rare book dealer, Rebecca Romney was a devoted reader of Jane Austen. She loved that Austen’s books took the lives of women seriously, explored relationships with wit and confidence, and always, allowed for the possibility of a happy ending. She read and reread them, often wishing Austen wrote just one more. But Austen wasn’t a lone genius. She wrote at a time of great experimentation for women writers—and clues about those women, and the exceptional books they wrote, are sprinkled like breadcrumbs throughout Austen’s work.

I have never been a fan of author read audiobooks. Although this is a very personal story, it could have been even better with a professional actor reading it.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

A MUST Read
Revisado: 11-18-24
The incisiveness of her critique and the depth of her research. This is a MUST read for anyone who wants to know how white Evangelicals can avidly support and vote in the millions for a man who represents all that they purport to despise.

Historia
An award-winning journalist obsessed with obsession, Bianca Bosker’s existence was upended when she wandered into the art world—and couldn’t look away. Intrigued by artists who hyperventilate around their favorite colors and art fiends who max out credit cards to show hunks of metal they think can change the world, Bosker grew fixated on understanding why art matters and how she—or any of us—could engage with it more deeply.

This was a fascinating exploration of the world of contemporary art by n all of its craziness.
Revisado: 10-31-24
As I’ve said in previous comments, having the author read their work is often not the best choice (exceptions are Toni Morrison and David McCullough, for instance), and that is the case with this book. The story she had to tell was just enough to offset her voice, which is not suited for audiobooks. That does not mean that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy “reading” this book. I learned a great deal about the contemporary art world and gained insight from the author’s final section about how to look at art.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat is the expert on the "strongman" playbook employed by authoritarian demagogues from Mussolini to Putin. In Strongmen, she lays bare the blueprint these leaders have followed over the past 100 years, and empowers us to recognize, resist, and prevent their disastrous rule in the future.

This is a prime example of why authors, generally speaking, should not read their own works. Toni Morrison reading Beloved is a notable exception. It’s a shame that a professional was not hired to read this one.

Jim Thorpe rose to world fame as a mythic talent who excelled at every sport. Most famously, he won gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. A member of the Sac and Fox Nation, he was an All-American football player at the Carlisle Indian School, the star of the first class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and played major league baseball for John McGraw’s New York Giants. Even in a golden age of sports celebrities, he was one of a kind.

Great book but beware
Revisado: 03-15-23
I read some years ago the paperback edition of David Maraniss’ brilliant story of the Vietnam War titled, They Marched Into Sunlight. It is a compelling story, powerfully told and meticulously researched. I highly recommend it. This book is similarly strong, but the publisher has made the now common mistake of having the author read the book. I have listened to many audiobooks over the years, and having professionals read them has always made the difference between an enjoyable experience and one like I had with this book. A thin, reedy voice and an unfamiliarity with cadence and pacing mark Maraniss’ reading unfortunately. So, beware of what you’ll get, set aside any discomfort you might feel, and try to enjoy the book nonetheless! It is an important retelling of a story that most people think they know but probably don’t!

Historia
In his Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry, Robert Lowell put his manic-depressive illness (now known as bipolar disorder) into the public domain, creating a language for madness that was new and arresting. As Dr. Jamison brings her expertise in mood disorders to bear on Lowell’s story, she illuminates not only the relationships among mania, depression, and creativity but also the details of Lowell’s treatment and how illness and treatment influenced the great work that he produced (and often became its subject).
