Historia
Drawing on a huge range of sources - letters, memoirs, conversations - Orlando Figes tells the story of how Russians tried to endure life under Stalin. Those who shaped the political system became, very frequently, its victims. Those who were its victims were frequently quite blameless. The Whisperers recreates the sort of maze in which Russians found themselves, where an unwitting wrong turn could either destroy a family or, perversely, later save it: a society in which everyone spoke in whispers - whether to protect themselves, their families, neighbours or friends - or to inform on them.

Excellently written!
Revisado: 11-11-20
This book is written so engagingly, with a wonderful warm sense of humor and a fabulous excitement that the author has regarding nature and biology, that I think even non scientific minded people would just adore the book. I loved the way the author told the story, it is so good, that I listened all the way through in spite of the narrator. I think the narrator, Chris Sorenson, needs more coaching to help rid him of his sing song delivery. Every line is delivered like a punch line with the same up down inflection. I hate to give bad reviews for someone, but I think Mr. Sorenson needs to learn how to read more naturally, and save the punch line affectation for when there really is one.

Historia
Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world.

Everybody should 'read' this book!
Revisado: 04-15-15
Would you listen to The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution again? Why?
Absolutely I will listen to this book again because it will help me remember all of this information. I love big picture - and to be able to see the process of how government evolved around the world, in various forms is very illuminating.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Fukuyama does an excellent job in condensing, and explaining the process of success and failure for all the variations of government that has arisen over time around the world.
Which character – as performed by Jonathan Davis – was your favorite?
Jonathan Davis did a marvelous read, beautifully paced, well modulated, clear and concise, and enormously 'readable'.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
The importance, use and misuse of taxes that all governments have experimented with.

Always a good story
Revisado: 04-15-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Dead Heat to be better than the print version?
Unfortunately no, I would, for the first time say that the audio book was hindered by the reader.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead Heat?
How Joseph, Hepzubah, Charles and Anna combined to beat the fae.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Holter Graham?
Yes, I'm sorry I would. Holter has a good voice, but his choice of where to pause, how often to pause, and his attempts at character voices needs a lot of work. In essence, some more voice acting classes. Who am I to judge, he may be doing these all the time, and his voice for Charles is okay, but overall I can't help compare him to Jim Dale or Lorelei King. Both of these actors play numerous characters, male and female and manage to convey distinct people, with 'memorable voices'. I wish Holter the best and want him to succeed, but until he can smooth out dramatic delivery, timing and character, I will say that he is driving me crazy on this book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Patricia always writes a great story.

Very good info
Revisado: 04-15-15
Would you consider the audio edition of ProBlogger to be better than the print version?
Probably not because there are lots of URLs and some other things in the way the book is structured that make more sense to see rather than read.
What other book might you compare ProBlogger to and why?
Can't say, first time for me to 'read' this type of book.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narrator could use some more work on developing a more natural read. He has good timbre, but a very stilted and some might say "affected" reading style.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I wish I could see this book differently
Revisado: 05-20-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Primarily my problem was the book's approach to prehistory and history, as a synthesis rather than a linear timeline. Kudos for looking at things from a big picture - but for me, it didn't add anything other than supposition. Maybe if I hadn't read so much history and archeology already I would have had a different response. Maybe if this had been updated to include current findings I would have been more engaged. I found the first several chapters sounded antiquated in information. The language in several cases came across as opinionated and unbalanced to my ears. The author does strive for balance overall. I understand he is writing with the mind-set of 1935, and from that point of view, you could say his verbiage was practically liberal; instead my overall impression was 'stop with the lists already!' I needed more citations for things that sounded like guesses and loose assumptions. In essence the effect of the first 6 chapters accumulated into my stopping the book and going on to another audio book. With that in mind, I would say my review is unfair, based on incomplete information.
Has Our Oriental Heritage turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was even, but lacked energy. I've 'read' more complex books with narrators that have kept me very engaged.
What character would you cut from Our Oriental Heritage?
Not appropriate.
Any additional comments?
none.
