Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Crazy is as Crazy Does
Revisado: 01-18-24
If I could write a more heartfelt review, I would. But I don’t want to. Juniper Song Hayward is crazy, entitled, ambitious, and terribly addicting. I don’t like her as a person nor do I like her motives. She makes Athena sound like the worst person ever while downplaying her own character. She STOLE from a dead person. Before the EMTs could even pronounce her dead. And then she had 2-3 years of profit off of it. Plenty of opportunities to come clean and even claim it as a collaboration but no. Selfish. Entitled. Juniper.

Historia
Touré Wallace and Niomi Spencer were close friends at Finley College, the prestigious HBCU they attended. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. Both chased their dreams of grit and glamor as high-profile journalists. They got it all...except a shot at being more than friends. Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America's most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing.

I usually read/listen to a romance story after Deep Diving into an epic fantasy novel and this novella was perfect.

Historia
Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals. They are hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality. Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory after her family was murdered by a rival line. For years she's pushed away any thought of revenge against the man - now a god - responsible for their deaths.

15hrs in 4 minutes
Revisado: 12-26-23
You ever read a really good story with a lot of potential only for the last 4 minutes to eradicate any and all logic of the moments before? Same.
Lore is supposed to be the one to beat. The girl who can do it all. The Spartan of her time. Infallible to fear. And yet, that’s all she embodied. And then to convince herself she had no role in her parents death. And ughhhhhhhhhhh… I love her but she’s the most unreliable narrator ever. At least Athena was consistent in her deceit and growth.
I also had to dwell on Castor and his memory gain toward the end. I figure if he’s becoming immortal then his memory can’t be lacking and it was restored to him. It was a giveaway arc but overall, it was the least concerning thing about the book. Roth sounds like the typical inner thoughts of a narcissist reincarnated and animated so his downfall was nice. Iro is my favorite character so far, Miles a close second. Side characters really pulled this story along and I’m grateful.
I can say I mostly enjoyed the story, and if there’s a sequel I’ll likely read it to see if these open end questions get resolved. But until then, it’ll hold absolutely no space in my mind.
The voice acting was phenomenal and I look forward to hearing more books from her.
