Historia
Ray Dalio does not want you to listen to this audiobook. Late last year, when the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund on the planet, announced that he was stepping down from the company he started out of his apartment nearly 50 years ago, the news made headlines around the world. Dalio cultivated an aura of international admiration and fame thanks to his company’s eye-popping success, coupled with a mystique he encouraged with frequent media appearances, celebrity hobnobbing, and his bestselling book, Principles.

Ray Dalio & Hedge Fund Culture: Toxic
Revisado: 09-22-24
A lot of this ran true, and sounded right. Finance culture was insane for years - qnd this is peak insanity. Only issue is this: why qnd how can people like Dalio have $3.5 Billion dollar years? No one is worth that much, for simply moving money around a wide playing field.

When ex-detective inspector Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, author Anthony Horowitz, are invited to an exclusive literary festival on Alderney, an idyllic island off the south coast of England, they don’t expect to find themselves in the middle of murder investigation - or to be trapped with a cold-blooded killer in a remote place with a murky, haunted past.

love this series

Hawthorne is as he always is, and “Tony” is a putz. Love this series, even though it was clear from early on how this might work itself out. Still - good story, wonderful audio performance and satisfying listen

Historia
In the bestselling The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver showed how forecasting would define the age of Big Data. Now, in this timely and riveting new book, Silver investigates "The River," or those whose mastery of risk allows them to shape—and dominate—so much of modern life. These professional risk takers—poker players and hedge fund managers, crypto true-believers and blue-chip art collectors—can teach us much about navigating the uncertainty of the 21st century.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 09-02-24
I don’t care much for poker, and the game provided mathematics and probability reference point for levels of risk Although I appeciate that and enjoyed listening to the book, it left a lot of assumptions, impacts and art of the game of decision making on the table - and didn’t really address the nature of risk-taking and applicability to our live, other than to talk about aspects of risk assessment, measurement, and mitigation that range expending on he risk-take, like SBF, or Thiel, or others, in a “fox and hedgehog” kinda way. The discussions of effective altruism (“EA”) and “Effective accelerationism” is nauseating.

I really enjoyed the science and data that backs up Attlia’s recommendations and story, as well as his performance (though I listened at 1.3x speed.)

Historia
When it comes to money, are you controlled by fear? Do you underestimate your worth? Are you ready to go to the next level, but can't seem to get there? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be an underearner. Underearners are self-saboteurs who don't live up to their earnings potential, says Barbara Stanny, a financial educator, motivational speaker, and career counselor. The good news is that underearning is a self-imposed condition. By focusing on overcoming it, underearners will not only earn what they deserve, but live a richer life.

I enjoyed it - but it needs updating to be up to date with internet and apps used for finance and also to recognize new markets and extraordinary volatility in all. Most people don’t really do paper checking much anymore…

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Historia
"How wonderful to be an artist and a woman in the twentieth century," Fleur Talbot rejoices. Loitering about London in 1949, with intent to gather material for her writing, Fleur finds a job "on the grubby edge of the literary world", as secretary to the odd Autobiographical Association. Are they a group of mad egomaniacs, hilariously writing their memoirs in advance, or poor fools ensnared by a blackmailer? Rich material, in any case.

Revisado: 01-28-24
This was an enjoyable and entertaining read, even though it felt at times a little bit contrived. The audio performance was good, but for a British accent that sounded more Australian - or something - than British, but that’s alright. Still a very good performance, and a fun read. I look forward to the next in this series.

Historia
Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

I had NO IDEA!!
Revisado: 01-01-24
Fascinating to find out a lot of details in history that made all the difference or turned the tide - or changed people’s o divided legacies. It was a good reminder that the way the story is framed often makes all the difference - I had no idea that Alexander Graham Bell jacked the patent for the phone because of his charm and conversation with a patent office clerk; or that two other inventors before him and Gray could have had the attribution but for sales and distribution. I didn’t know that Edison lied about having a working light bulb to secure funding - and that it took him another year after he got his $50k in investment (and ultimately made all his investors rich - but he was certainly engaged in hyperbole if not outright fraud!)
And how narrow the escapes were for George Washington, Lenin, Hitler, JFK and a host of others who were targets of assasination attempts or missed opportunities in war! But for a step to the left or the right…or Napoleon’s hemorrhoids flaring up, the world would be a dramatically different place.
