This tenth anniversary revised edition of the authoritative text on Christianity's first thousand years of history features a new preface and an updated bibliography. The essential general survey of medieval European Christendom, Brown's vivid prose charts the compelling and tumultuous rise of an institution that came to wield enormous religious and secular power.

Mind-expanding book
Revisado: 06-15-23
This breath-taking book demolishes much educated ignorance about ancient and medieval history and the spread of Christianity, and I would hope that it has become a standard work in the field. The narrator reads fluently and well, but, oh, some of his mispronunciations. Aachen. Vosges. Braudel. Ancien régime. Luxeuil. Chef d'oeuvre. Thessaloniki. What he does this with these will shock you.

Historia
Origin is the story of who the first peoples in the Americas were, how and why they made the crossing, how they dispersed south, and how they lived based on a new and powerful kind of evidence: their complete genomes. Origin provides an overview of these new histories throughout North and South America, and a glimpse into how the tools of genetics reveal details about human history and evolution.

Terrific story -- as long as she sticks to it
Revisado: 07-27-22
The author has a fascinating, mind-opening story to tell about archaeology, genetics, and the societies that give rise to them. But her narration of her own exploits is a crashing bore, like a bright, too earnest high school student writing about how she spent her summer vacation. Here's one small example: "The antechamber where you change your footwear is called the anteroom." I recommend blowing through these soporific portions at high speed.

Fine book; narrator should have done some research
Revisado: 07-24-22
It's a excellent book about history I suspect will be new to many readers. But, by God, if a reader is going to narrate a book in which France and French names play so prominent a role, he ought to bone up on basic French pronunciation. And does he really think "fortuitously" is pronounced "for-tu-ISH-ous-ly"?

Historia
The groundbreaking trans-genre work of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) has been insinuating itself into the structure, stance, and very breath of world literature for well over half a century. Multi-layered, self-referential, elusive, and allusive writing is now frequently labelled Borgesian.

Stimulating book, but what's with that narrator?
Revisado: 12-15-21
I especially enjoyed the essays, but the narrator mispronounced so many words, including names, that I wonder whether some deliberate Borges joke was in play.

Historia
When the last honest citizen of Poisonville was murdered, the Continental Op stayed on to punish the guilty--even if that meant taking on an entire town. Red Harvest is more than a superb crime novel: it is a classic exploration of corruption and violence in the American grain. From the author of The Maltese Falcon.

Deserves six stars
Revisado: 12-04-20
One of the strongest novels in the series. At times it has an almost Sciascia-like air of nightmare intrigue, and it takes up a contemporary issue without hitting the reader over the head with its contemporariness.
