Historia
Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

There is a good reason this is one of King's most famous books.
Revisado: 01-14-25
I hesitated to read this for a long time, because I had already seen the movie. And while I ended up loving the book, I can truly say that this is one of the instances we're both movie and book are equally important works.
There were definitely scenes from the movie that the book leaves out which are iconic to the point that the original story feels less without them. But there is so much in the book that the movie either didn't or couldn't portray well. That can only exist in the form of written media. The character of Jack Torrance is so much more relatable and tragic. The magic of The Overlook seems so much grander. And the turmoil in all the character's psyches, while they try and navigate (and often downplay), what is at first
just confusing, then uncomfortable, and finally horrifying is so much more complex.
I would highly recommend this book and the movie based on it to any horror fan. Or even any fan of literature, provided that they can at least stomach the horror portions.

hits all the YA fantasy romance tropes but good

listened to this after having read some heavier stories and it was a refreshing break. It is the same bones and structure of many fantasy novels, but is fun none the less. Entertaining and well narrated.

Historia
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Not for the squeamish, but well worth the read
Revisado: 10-16-24
I'm sure a lot of other reviews warn this, but there is a lot of animal abuse in the story. It's used in some parts just for shock value, but in many ways, the story hinges upon it, both to drive the narrative and the moral of the story forward.
This is something that I usually cannot get past, but i'm glad I did. The book is well written.

fulfilling ending!
Revisado: 12-06-23
the character growth, story line, narration, and writing were fantastic. I still don't love the infantalized language Holly uses at times, but I still managed to actually grow attached to the character. Might be the best king book/trilogy I have listened to!

Historia
A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far - a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes. "Wake up, genius." So begins King's instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades.

fantastic narration, as always
Revisado: 11-22-23
I did not care for this as much as the first book in the series. A bit too much of Kings "coming of age" stuff. the very end though, that seems to set up the next book, is exciting. I will definitely say this series has some of the most satisfying endings of any work I've read by King. Normally i am left feeling cheated or bored by the end of his works.

Historia
At the outskirts of Maple City sits the Crossroads Motel, a throwback to the days when the motor lodge was king. Two years ago, the motel was the site of an act so brutal that its buildings were left to rot. Jessie Voss, however, sees promise in the Crossroad's bare bones and buys it up, determined to breathe new life into the place. When the Larson family shows up on her doorstep, road-weary and desperate for a break, Jessie offers them lodging, even though her grand opening is still a week away. But the arrival of guests awakens the motel....

better than the first book
Revisado: 10-17-23
I am really enjoying the connections and changes that this story brought to the first part. it is far better as a series than either would be on their own. hoping the third book keeps it up. This feels like a story that could be cemented or ruined based on the ultimate ending.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

what could be creepier than a severed head?
Revisado: 09-12-23
The monster in this book. Veteran horror enthusiast here, and this book gave me the chills and actually surprised me. Narrator was mostly very good, but his side character male voices came out very nasaly. not too distracting though. Good over all narration and feminine voices, which is impressive! very pleased and will check out other works by both the author and narrator.

Cliché but not terrible
Revisado: 09-04-23
Main characters are basically shuffled along in the story rather than active participants. Everything you'd expect to happen in an exorcist story happens just about the way you'd expect it to. Author tried for really gory horror, and maybe, like other reviewers, I'm just jaded by being a horror buff, but it really fell flat in that area. No one ever actually felt like they were in danger. No characters were really likeable anyway. Narrator was ok but not great.
