Historia
From the author of Apocalyptic Planet, an unsparing, vivid, revelatory travelogue through prehistory that traces the arrival of the First People in North America 20,000 years ago and the artifacts that enable us to imagine their lives and fates. This book upends our notions of where these people came from and who they were.

The Key word is Travelogue
Revisado: 08-18-21
I should have read the summary closer. I thought this would be a book on the origins of people in the Americas. Instead, it is as described, a Travelogue of the author's trips around to various sites. Included is an in-depth description of his friends and family. Very little science here and what there is, is at a summary Wikipedia level at best. If you like Travelogues, like a slide show of someone's recent Disney vacation with pictures of Aunt Maude - this is the book for you. If you are looking for the science behind the first people in the Americas you may want to find another source.

Historia
In 1519 Magellan and his fleet of five ships set sail from Seville, Spain, to discover a water route to the fabled Spice Islands in Indonesia, where the most sought-after commodities (cloves, pepper, and nutmeg) flourished. Three years later, a handful of survivors returned with an abundance of spices from their intended destination, but with just one ship carrying 18 emaciated men. During their remarkable voyage around the world the crew endured starvation, disease, mutiny, and torture. Many men died, including Magellan, who was violently killed in a fierce battle.

Excellent Overview of Magellan's Journey
Revisado: 08-10-21
This was a delightful and educational book perfect for listening. The author tells the story with few side lines other than to fill the reader in on necessary information to provide background for Magellan's journey. Very informative.

Historia
Imprisoned in a remote Turkish POW camp during World War I, having survived a two-month forced march and a terrifying shootout in the desert, two British officers, Harry Jones and Cedric Hill, join forces to bamboozle their iron-fisted captors. To stave off despair and boredom, Jones takes a handmade Ouija board and fakes elaborate séances for his fellow prisoners. Word gets around, and one day, an Ottoman official approaches Jones with a query: Could Jones contact the spirit world to find a vast treasure rumored to be buried nearby?

Goofy Rendition
Revisado: 07-19-21
This story is rather generic. Written like a New Yorker article. Main story and then jumping to side stories with quite a bit of mundane information such as the history of the Ouija Board. The real drawback was the use of "goofy" voices by the narrator when reading from quoted newspaper articles. This was just strange and it took a lot away from the story. If you like this kind of book you may want to read the book instead of listening to this version of it.

Historia
As humans, we all need to belong. While modern social life can make even the best of us feel gawky, for roughly one in five of us, navigating its challenges is consistently overwhelming - an ongoing maze without an exit. Often unable to grasp social cues or master the skills and grace necessary for smooth interaction, we feel out of sync with those around us. Though individuals may recognize their awkward disposition, they rarely understand why they are like this.

Doctor Accept thy Self
Revisado: 01-23-20
I assume the author was attempting to sell books with the “Awkward” title. It is sad however, that the basic research and personnel experiences he discusses of people on the spectrum, he decides to label as “Awkward”. Neuro-Diverse, Aspergers, Autism, On-the-Spectrum are all accepted and much more informative and less negative ways of describing people who are not Neuro-Typical. It seems the author needs to be more accepting of himself and the Neuro-Diverse world we live in. If someone on the Spectrum needs to place a derogatory label on their behavior and the behavior of others who are Neuro-Diverse, then what can we expect from people who are Neuro-Typical in regards to understanding differences.

In this collection of classic ghost stories from Japan, beautiful princesses turn out to be frogs, paintings come alive, deadly spectral brides haunt the living and a samurai delivers the baby of a Shinto goddess with mystical help. Here are all the phantoms and ghouls of Japanese folklore: 'rokuro-kubi', whose heads separate from their bodies at night; 'jikininki', or flesh-eating goblins; and terrifying faceless 'mujina' who haunt lonely neighbourhoods.

Interesting information. Probably enjoyed the background on the author the most as it could be easily followed. The rest of the book with footnotes interspersed mid text was a bit difficult.

Historia
In 1956, toward the end of Reverend John Ames's life, he begins a letter to his young son, an account of himself and his forebears. Ames is the son of an Iowan preacher and the grandson of a minister who, as a young man in Maine, saw a vision of Christ bound in chains and came west to Kansas to fight for abolition: He "preached men into the Civil War", then, at age 50, became a chaplain in the Union Army, losing his right eye in battle.

Marilynne Robinson is a gift to readers. Like Steinbeck she understands what drives people. I believe her book Housekeeping is more accessible then this book but with a little effort and patience you will find great insight here.

I have never listened to a tragedy let alone a play on audible. This is captivating. The performance is superb. The interview with the director at the end is also very engrossing.

A Classic / Worth Listening
Revisado: 10-08-19
The timelessness of a book is a key to its success. Even though the time period is not current it is the behavior of the characters that makes this book interesting.
