Historia
Elien Martel is a survivor, but surviving, he’s beginning to discover, isn’t the same thing as living. In the house he shares with his much older boyfriend, Elien spends his days trying to stay as far away from living as possible. Living, he has learned, means that sooner or later you’ll get hurt. When a member of Elien’s support group dies under strange circumstances, though, Elien finds himself in a web of bizarre coincidences. The responding officer turns out to be another member of Elien’s support group - who has made no effort to hide his dislike of Elien.

Gregory Ashe does it again
Revisado: 05-21-23
ash has always been one of my favorite MM novelists. He spins stories that progress organically are interesting. Build up the characters in ways that are real and has a talent for writing, true Romance, as in the pretty and the ugly.
This is a pretty standard mystery, monster book. The scares weren’t very incredible although there are some gruesome scenes being an MM novel I will say that there’s at least one block within a chapter describing a lovemaking scene, which is broken up into two parts. That scene itself is gratuitous, but not graphic. Nothing about it is flippant. The scene is very much a first time/coming-of-age/exploring unexplored territory scene.
there are some moments where you want to slap some characters but overall this is not an anxiety book. It was a very easy listen, and I recommend it to any MM fans looking for that little something else.

A unique story compromised by profanity
Revisado: 05-23-22
The premise and skeleton for this book are strong enough to carry it to the end, but I expect people will be split whether they want to continue the series afterward.
I LIKED
The performance of the narrator is a tremendous asset to this audiobook, and although i can think of several other narrators who could have done similarly good (in some cases even better) jobs, a bad or mediocre performance would have made this unreadable for me.
I enjoyed the premise. The telepathy adds an interesting layer. The world-building is commendable.
I DID NOT LIKE
Entirely too much use of the "F*g"-bomb. I can only listen to the MC, and the crew around the ship call them "f*ggots" so often before it becomes campy, outright cheapens the material. I suspect the author was trying to create an environment hostile to our protagonists, but that's not how you do it. Just sticking that word in and then leaning on it is lazy writing, a little offensive, and naive. It's also unbelievable that we've reached a point in the book where space travel is now reality, yet people still care about sexual preferences?
The MC goes from saying the same word to only days later giving hand jobs in the shower. This is embarrassing on its own, trivializing preference, and turns it into a choice to be flipped on or off. Of course, there are beautiful things about the relationship, regardless of the genesis. But the insta-love is not matched by the comedic level of adolescent acting grown men so bigoted they use the F-bomb whenever they can. Stop making the environment adversarial. There's enough drama between the Doc and the ranking Officers, in addition to the impending Faceless contact. You don't need that nonsense out in the hallways. It's jarring, and there's no reason I should have heard it half a dozen times in an hour of reading.
SHOULD YOU READ THIS?
If you like MM, and you like sci-fi, definitely! If you don't like MM, you'd probably still enjoy it, as long as you don't mind the male love interests. If you're not a sci-fi fan, I think you can still get into this. The most frequent displays of sci-fi/fantasy are accessible enough that you could still have a great time.
As a sci-fi/fantasy fan and MM fanatic, I might be shelving this series. I definitely am in no hurry to read the second book. But they'll be in my Wishlist for now. Despite its shortcoming, I DID enjoy the read, if not a bit jarred.

Historia
Everett Larkin works for the Cold Case Squad: an elite - if understaffed and overworked - group of detectives who solve the forgotten deaths of New York City. Larkin is different from others, but his deduction skills are unmatched and his memory for minute details is unparalleled. So when a spring thunderstorm uproots a tree in Madison Square Park, unearthing a crate with human remains inside, the best Cold Case detective is assigned the job.

Great mystery and lovable characters, and I would recommend to any lover of gay fiction
Revisado: 02-26-22
The best thing that I enjoyed about this story was the relationship between characters, mainly the relationship shared between the two main protagonists, but there are dynamics all over the place that make this such an enjoyable read.
Larkin and Doyle are opposites attracting kind of couple, but the author builds them in a way that makes their dovetailing believable without falling into the tired bickering but falls in love tropes.
Both protagonists are also really easy to like, and you be can’t ask for more other than a plot that unfolds smartly And with forethought. There are characters here that are entirely unlikeable, and they are so by design. Be aware the F-bomb slur does get dropped by a homophobic character or two, and while this listener is used to it by now, it is still jarring to hear.
There was an ear to itch; we navigated some of the characters less likable. Having one of the more unsavory assholes turn into more of a Frenemy felt very satisfying.
I typically like to listen to gay fiction because I enjoy a little bit of romance, a lot of good storytelling, and maybe just a little bit of smut and a happily ever after. The mystery in this book unfolded in just the right order and then just the right ways to make the story enjoyable more than I thought it would be.
Be warned if you are looking for the happily ever after, you might feel a little edged with this book as it seems to be the first in a series, and the relationship between the protagonist develops as a slow burn. I usually can’t stand those because they are either done too poorly, or my impatience won’t allow me to. in every case here, I have made an ex exception to Madison Square Murders.
Finally, I would like to extend a huge thank you to the narrator for being just the right amount of performance balanced with just the right amount of narration. It doesn’t hurt that his voice is smoking hot either. Haha.
