Super smart concept with flawless execution
Revisado: 03-21-24
A very, very smart concept. Without a doubt. But you have to be into slow burns to really get into this one. The pace at which things unfold is painstakingly slow, however, I'm not sure this story could have been told in another way. Hard to say. You just have to stick with it until the last third of the novel when it steps up the pace and starts to hit us with more information and crucial developments in the story. Once a couple of pieces of information were revealed around the 2/3's mark things dropped into place for me but despite my beliefs about where it was going there was no way to know for sure until I got there. The author keeps you in the dark and wondering right up until the final reveal. You may think you know but you cant know that you know. The author keeps his cards close to his chest. Overall, it is worth sticking it out thru the slow burn portions even if that's not your thing. The writing was impeccable and the execution was flawless. Waiting to see it all unfold was engaging even if I believed I knew where it was going. I think my only complaint is the super slow burn for the first two thirds without some spikes in excitement to propel us along a bit. But that's just me and mileage will vary by reader depending on their preferences. Lastly, i'm not sure if the author intended for the reader to feel any particular way after reading Beta, but as for me, people still scare me more than AI. Hands down.

We—all of us—consistently exclude, underestimate, and underutilize huge numbers of people in the workforce even as we include, overestimate, and promote others, often beyond their level of competence. Not only is this immoral and unjust, it's bad for business. Just Work is the solution. Just Work is Kim Scott's new book, revealing a practical framework for both respecting everyone’s individuality and collaborating effectively.

Great book

Great book. It’s packed, and like Radical Candor, I recommend multiple passes. With each pass, you’ll pick up more principles or truths.

Superb in every way!
Revisado: 06-23-23
I read this book once and listened to it twice. I've listened to The Men from Porlock (my fav story in this collection and one of my all time fav stories) about five times. If i could rate Ray Porter ten stars i damn sure would. He's an incredible narrator and pitch perfect for Barron's works. He brings both characters and stories to life and crank the creep factor up to eleven with his voice. Places in The Men from Porlock and More Dark especially are super creepy both due to the content and the performance. I absolutely love this collection.

The idea is simple: You don't have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk. Using Radical Candor - avoiding the perils of Obnoxious Aggression, Manipulative Insincerity, and Ruinous Empathy - you can be kind and clear at the same time. Kim Scott was a highly successful leader at Google before decamping to Apple, where she developed and taught a management class.

Hook, Line, and Sinker
Revisado: 02-18-22
This book quickly grabbed me and held on tight. Excellent storytelling and character development and kept you wondering just who or what was the beast up until the end. I had my guesses but there was no way to know for sure and that’s exactly how I like a story like this to be. There was one small thing left unresolved to my liking but still it’s a five star read or listen. Also, the Narration of the audible version was excellent.

Listening to this classic was an amazing experience, with Tim Curry at the helm. I knew that Mr. Curry was an amazing talent and worked hard at his craft, but seeing and simply hearing are two different experiences all together. Listening to this classic was an absolute treat.

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Good title
Revisado: 08-14-21
While the title grabbed my attention, it felt more cathartic for the writer & performer than it was helpful for the reader.
I’d be interested in reading her future works on the subject, if they feel less like expressions of personal frustration, and deal more with actual counseling concepts. The language didn’t bother me at all, and while many may find this book a fun or helpful read, it was painful for me to listen to on Audible.

Brewster Gilligan, an underachieving genius, believes that his loss on a television quiz show is the worst thing to ever happen to him. Little does he know that the phrase he answered with, a bit of trivia he remembered from his dead grandfather, was a scrap of forbidden knowledge that would trigger a cabal of dangerous immortals to hunt him down.

Cosmic Horror and Black Humor
Revisado: 05-09-20
This was a fun listen on Audible. The protagonist isn’t a particularly likable fellow but the story makes up for it. The narrative flows like a movie and it is easy to picture all the crazy scenes of immortal combat and sorcery along with the blood and gore. It’s an enjoyable combination of cosmic horror and black humor. Definitely recommend to those who want a quick romp thru an inter dimensional drama where the stakes are the world as we know it.

Fun, wild ride, mixing elements of western along with supernatural and cosmic horror. Witches, gods, cult members, and hardcore lawmen. The author’s writing style is engaging and pulls you along. The narrator also makes it feel like a real Wild West tale.
