Last book of his I will ever read
Revisado: 01-14-25
I am done with his IP for good. I am just one person but I have discretionary income I spend on my hobbies. I have read almost everything from him but now I am done. I was going to buy the entire WoT leather book series being released by him which I was going to match it with the whole of Cosmere. Sanderson made his choice and now I make mine. I wish him well on his journey but I will no longer be apart of it.

Narrator not a good fit and inconsistent character development.
Revisado: 05-06-24
***small spoilers ***
I want to preface this and say that Larry is one of my all time favorite authors. Everything he has put out I have voraciously consumed. This book and the narrator are not up to par.
The narrator was ill suited for this series. The last book Larry hired a female narrator I said would be my last because it was so bad. I barely made it thru half the book before I finished it with my Kindle. This was no exception. I only got this book on Audible because it was 5 bucks and said why not. So glad I didn’t use a credit because I would have been incredibly disappointed. I am sure Ms. Chaves is a great author for other series but not for this one. The pronunciation of Cazador got on my very last nerve and I was so happy it never came up after the beginning. I don’t care how it’s supposed to be pronounced. You always pronounce the word the way the locals do. But if you want to get technical Chloe is supposed to be Mexican. Mexicans do not pronounce Cazador with a th sound. That is how the Spanish pronounce it. So if you want to do it right then do it right. Her male voices are atrocious. Comical. I would rather she just not do them. I am a huge fan of female narrators and voice actors. Kate Reading being my favorite. I will never purchase a book from this series again with a female narrator unless the reviews say otherwise. But this book was cheap so it was worth the gamble.
The inconsistent character development. Chloe is supposed to be old with a ton of experience. She is also half human with the other half being a Aztec Princess goddess. Multiple times in the book she said she isn’t a good shot. How???? She is supposed to be like 80 years old. Give or take some years. This is not how skill is developed. It should be impossible for her to be a bad shot. She has had nothing but time and otherworldly abilities to develop them. She also worked for a secret elite Israeli kill team! It is unrealistic and unreasonable for her to still be just an ok shot. She is also supposed to be incredibly experienced due to her age and things she has done. She comes off as semi experienced and semi confident. The last thing that bothered me was her lack of investments and money. She is supposed to be very intelligent and diligent but she somehow never figured how to invest appropriately. Really??? Couldn’t be bothered over the last 80 years to ask her colleagues on how to at least keep up with inflation? All these character traits do not make a compelling character. Why would we really care that much about her when she never developed herself. Just kinda moving along thru life and kills monsters and humans. Idiot meatheads do that. She isn’t supposed to be one of those.
Story was fine. Not great. I will still read anything Larry puts out. They can’t all be bangers. But this was way below the quality of storytelling and narrative that he is known for. Read it cheaply or you’ll be disappointed.

This audiobook narrated by acclaimed archaeologist and best-selling author Eric Cline offers a breathtaking account of how the collapse of an ancient civilized world ushered in the first Dark Ages.

Listened like a textbook
Revisado: 12-27-23
It was very interesting but I was unable to grasp the grandeur of the age. This was like listening to a college textbook. I can forgive the performance since it was done by the author during COVID but his oratory skills kept me from being able to grasp what he was trying to convey. Maybe I missed something. I would listen again but don’t think I can make it through 10 hours of that. There were so many dates and people mentioned but I couldn’t grasp the context or follow the interconnectedness of the region or rulers or the timeline. It bounced back and forth thru centuries and was easy to get lost. I was hoping that the foundation was being laid for him to expound in greater depth on what he and his colleagues feel happened. His conclusions were glazed over compared to the length of the audiobook.
Nothing felt connected in anyway. He would tell a good story on a disagreement between rulers and what happened but how does that play into the grand scheme of this text. It was very dry with a ton of information but no real story was being told. This was so close to being great. If this was a college course I could have attended this probably would’ve been outstanding. But this is an audio book which must stand on its own. My review is all over the place like this book. This felt like a reading of a textbook. I am intrigued by the information laid out and will look for someone else’s work that can expound on this. I wish I could have enjoyed this. Maybe I’ll give it another listen in a couple of years.

Horrendous Narration
Revisado: 09-06-19
I have never ever ever ever returned a book to Audible until this book. If she is ever narrating a book again I won’t buy it. I’ll just get the Kindle version. Maybe she is great for female YT fantasy but this was ridiculous. There is no way the reviews for this performance averaged over 4.3 stars. Impossible. I scrolled through the reviews and they were abysmal. I’m sorry Larry. This was way out of pocket bro bro. Please don’t do something like this again. Please.
