Historia
Lennon Carter’s life is falling apart. Then she gets a mysterious phone call inviting her to take the entrance exam for Drayton College, a school of magic hidden in a secret pocket of Savannah. Lennon has been chosen because—like everyone else at the school—she has the innate gift of persuasion, the ability to wield her will like a weapon, using it to control others and, in rare cases, matter itself.

Really fun first half
Revisado: 10-20-24
The first half of this book was really fun. It was giving Vita Nostra vibes, which I’ve been hunting for since I finished that novel. But as the book progressed, I found myself becoming less interested and more annoyed, especially with our main character. She fell flat for me, putting herself into pretty contrived conflicts and with no sense for resolving things on her own. None of the characters felt 3-dimensional to me, even though there was a whole cast of classmates, professors, and family. The only ones who had any development at all were Lennon and Dante, and even then, I struggled to really connect with either of them.
The rat revolution was pretty awesome, though.

Took a while to get to the meat of it, but I’m glad I stuck around.
Revisado: 06-25-24
When I first started this book, I couldn’t foresee it getting a good review. I found the pacing to be odd, I couldn’t relate to the main character. In the end, though, I really came to care for a few of the characters and the trauma they were sorting through. I’m a sucker for a good character portrait, and this one did a great job of that by the end. Grief and loss, love and lost love, are always difficult subjects, but this book handled them with care.

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Loved the cover, at least
Revisado: 05-25-24
The narrator was great, but the story felt repetitive with very little actually happening. I just kept wishing for it to be over.

Historia
Laura was in her early twenties and directionless when she quit her job to backpack in Bolivia. Fate landed her at a wildlife sanctuary on the edge of the Amazon jungle where she was assigned to a beautiful and complex puma named Wayra. Wide-eyed, inexperienced, and comically terrified, Laura made the scrappy, make-do camp her home. And in Wayra, she made a friend for life.

Beautiful and Important
Revisado: 09-08-22
I feel so lucky to have stumbled onto this book. It was incredibly moving, heartfelt, sincere. It was new and nostalgic, I feel like I've lived years in Bolivia working beside Laura Coleman.
Listening to this narrated by the author, I feel like the experience is unparalleled. The clear passion in her voice, the expression that anyone else would need to imitate but for her is just telling her story, it's unmatchable.
To be clear, I've always been passionate about animals, conservation, and protection. It was easy for me to relate to the struggles that Laura and the sanctuary went through, to feel the desire to work hard and make a difference, no matter how small. This book is incredibly inspiring, sad, motivating, and uplifting. We all have to keep doing our parts.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Informative but not stuffy
Revisado: 09-08-22
I don't think I've ever been as enthralled listening to a book about history. It's horrifying, of course, but Higginbotham fascinated me, it felt like reading a thriller where I already know the ending, the question is how? He focuses so much on the human aspect of everything, on the small mistakes and the individuals who helped this disaster to occur, but he also doesn't shy away from panoramic views of the event as a whole. I've learned so much from this book, and would recommend it to anyone who has even the slightest interest in the events of Chernobyl.

Entirely unschooled in the art of court politics, he has no friends, no advisors, and the sure knowledge that whoever assassinated his father and brothers could make an attempt on his life at any moment.

This book felt like a gift to my inner child
Revisado: 09-08-22
I think that if I had read this ten years ago, it would've been my favorite book of all time. It perfectly appeals to my inner child - an unexpected heir to the throne, the struggle to find your place, high fantasy and political intrigue. I would've jumped right in to dissect it, piece together my own fan-made goblin to live in this world.
As an adult, I still really enjoyed it! But I did find some parts to be harder to immerse myself in than I expected. Many of the names, titles, and places are confusing to keep straight, with my eyes glossing over them to put context clues to what they actually were. I wish that the plot was a bit more concise - while I do enjoy good world building, some parts here seemed to drag.
That being said, it was thoroughly enjoyable, I only wish I would have read this sooner.

Pleasantly Surprised
Revisado: 09-08-22
I came in with extremely low expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. This book is a very fun read. The idea of a modern American monarchy was silly but enjoyable, how different the country would be! I really liked all of the main characters, enjoyed the different perspectives and their interactions. The plot itself was a little bit slow, but I never found myself to be bored. It was just an interesting concept with interesting characters, but didn't go too deeply into any of it. Undecided if I'll pick up the next in the series or not, but I'm definitely not against it.

Incredibly Gripping
Revisado: 09-08-22
I don’t normally read thrillers, but I couldn’t put this one down. The story was super gripping, it had me suspicious of everyone and everything, knowing something was wrong but unable to quite say what. A super fun read I’d recommend to anyone even remotely interested.

What a fun ride!
Revisado: 09-08-22
I am SO late to this party. But at least I've arrived?
This book has one of the most interesting first chapters I've read in a while - it's instantly gripping and had me totally invested. It fell off a good bit towards the end, but it was still a really fun read, and didn't fall into many of the tropes I expected of it.
It's not quite Little Mermaid, and I think that's one of its strengths. It has the spirit of a retelling, but so much flavor and substance that's all its own.
