Historia
College students Kenji and Dylan stumble upon a strange recording in the background of an obscure song. It's a woman's voice uttering a string of seemingly random characters. Upon further inspection, the song appears to have been embedded with a hidden message. Attempting to crack the mysterious code and becoming obsessed with the recording, Kenji and Dylan set off in search of answers. With every turn in the road however, the puzzle only seems to grow more complicated.

Good story but narrator was not the best choice
Revisado: 09-28-22
I have listened to most of Ambrose Ibsen’s books on audible and have enjoyed all of them. They have used the same narrator but they all worked fine. This narrator while not untalented did not really work for this type of story as he was very monotone and made the story seem dull sometimes. I was able to get over it though and the story was still enjoyable.

Historia
Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children’s toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can’t explain. And then...nothing. When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger’s gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there’s nothing she can do but wait. At least the stranger seems kind...but Clare doesn’t know if she can trust him.

A Romance Novel Disguised as a Horror Novel
Revisado: 11-09-20
The best way to describe this book is as a romance novel disguised as a horror novel. I decided to give this book a chance as it dominates (as well as Coates other novels) the horror section of Barnes and Noble and because of the relatively high reviews. Overall I was not very impressed and was very relived to be done with it.
The characters (which really there are only two of) are lifeless and dull. Clare the protagonist is bland, but is tolerable except for when she is being hysterical and talking about how much she loves Dorran. However Dorran (the love interest) was really cringey and very difficult to take seriously. He is the epitome of the handsome mysterious guy trope . He immediately falls in love with Clare upon arrival of Winterborne and is constantly talking about how important she is to him and he will do anything for her. The problem is I don't believe their love story as it just doesn't seem to develop from anything.
My next complaint is an issue I have seen not just in this book, but something reoccurring I have noticed for awhile with many books/movies/tv shows. I'm so tired of every book having a place with "Winter" in the title ever wince Winterfell from A Song of Ice and Fire/ Game of Thrones. At this point it is so overdone and everyone knows where you got the name idea from. Also, did the love interest really need to be named Dorran? It just seemed like yet another check mark next to the "mysterious guy" trope in having a weird name. All I know is that every time I heard either "Dorran" or "Winterborne" I cringed internally. I admit this maybe a personal issue, but I wanted to include it just in case anyone else noticed these trends and felt the same way.
On a positive note I did appreciate Clare not being a Mary Sue super powered wonder woman. She was quite scared in situations that most of us would be scared in and I appreciated that realistic characteristic. If you want a romance novel with a slight horror twist this may be the book for you,. However, that is not what I thought I was getting when I picked this up.

Historia
In her late 20s, Cait Flanders found herself stuck in the consumerism cycle that grips so many of us: earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat. Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy - only keeping her from meeting her goals - she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year. The Year of Less documents Cait's life for 12 months during which she bought only consumables.

Lots of good information, but too much of a biography
Revisado: 12-30-18
Cait has an interesting story, but there is way too much of her personal story around the halfway point of this book. I really didn’t need to hear in detail about her parents divorce or about some internet trolls leaving mean comments on her blog. Overall a good listen, but I was a bit annoyed by the side personal stories that didn’t seem to add much to a book about how to spend less and live a more minimalistic lifestyle.

Where does a moderately popular internet star who never leaves her house look for potential suitors? Online. Tinder, Bumble, Match.com, OkCupid - I tried them all. My 31-year-old self clicked and swiped her little heart out, leading to more dates than I could count, and more disappointment than I was prepared for. Maybe you can relate. Maybe you know all too well the perils of modern dating.

Definitely an interesting and shocking read
Revisado: 12-20-18
I watched Brittani back in the day when she made videos with Shane Dawson. I was not aware that this horrible situation and felt I wanted to learn more of what happened. Needless to say I was shocked by what I heard, it is truly amazing (in an awful way) that people like this exist. Don’t expect any profound writing as she is not a practiced author, but I have to say it was a very interesting story.

At no point I was hooked
Revisado: 12-18-18
There just seemed to be something missing from the story. I think one major flaw is we never see the lives of the sisters before the siege of Sarajevo. We just jump into the story as a few of the sisters are escaping. It’s not a terrible book, but I just couldn’t get to into it.

Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Good overall, but some major problems
Revisado: 08-27-18
I was pretty excited to read this book as a Russian folklore enthusiast and since all of the reviews were so positive. Overall the book was good, but I had a few major issues.
1.) Bad Russian accents - I am a bit surprised that several reviews said the accents were “spot on”..... sorry, but I found them annoying and very distracting. I wish the narrator hadn’t done them at all.
2.) Characters were not memorable- I just finished the book and I struggle to describe a single character without describing their family position or their job. The main character is a bit of an exception, but even still she didn’t have many other traits than just being defiant.
3.) The reoccurring last name -ovich - I get that the author was trying to use a last name that was common in the area and time frame, but EVERY SINGLE
PERSON HAD A LAST NAME WITH -ovich in it. That would be giving every person in Cambridge Massachusetts the last name Smith. Just because it is common does not mean everyone has that last name or something similar.
That was pretty much it, if you don’t think these things will bother you I would say go for it. It did have an interesting premise and leads nicely up to a sequel.
Overall I did like the story, but these issues did detract from enjoyment of it.

Alot of opinions not a lot of facts
Revisado: 01-11-18
The author tries to pass ALOT of unproven scientific claims as fact in this book. Some examples include gluten intolerance (the people who even funded this original study have since admitted they were wrong), only drinking water an hour before or after eating, fluoride affects on water and many more. She also seems rather obsessive with her “quest for wellness” and seems down right rude to a lot of people who don’t follow her unscientifically proven lifestyle (I can’t imagine why they might be resistant l......)
Don’t get me wrong, if she wants to eat this way that’s her prerogative. However I do have an issue with her presenting fiction as fact to fit her agenda. Would not recommend unless you are interested in the claims I previously stated.
