So enjoyed the wonderful character development. McDowell’s writing is frequently poetic. I am an avid reader loving historical fiction, mystery, even horror. All my boxes are checked with this book.

Historia
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

This is what literature should always be.
Revisado: 07-27-20
This book is an amazing work of fiction. Each character grows in the imagination because of the author's careful and concise development. This is prose, something that is rare in today's literature. I am an avid reader, always have a book I am reading and a book I am listening to on Audible. I do not often review a book and am not given to unearned praise. After the first 3 sentences in this review, the reader truly doesn't need further information.

Historia
In July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went into a cornfield and shot himself. Or did he? Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his life... and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue? These are just a few of the questions confronting Vincent's friends who vow to discover the truth of van Gogh's untimely death.

Thoroughly entertaining
Revisado: 01-19-19
Percy's books include a sound depiction of Victorian life and excellent character development. I tend to find an author I like and read everything he.she has written. Great mystery plots always and when narrated by Davina Porter, I am a very happy listener. Note to listeners: I stumbled on Perry because of the narrator!

Historia
Hailed as Charlotte Brontë’s “finest novel” by Virginia Woolf, Villette is the timeless semi-autobiographical tale of Lucy Snowe. Left with no family and no money, Lucy goes against her own timid nature and travels to the small city of Villette, France, where she becomes a school teacher in Madame Beck’s school for girls. During her stay, she falls in love—twice—and discovers an independent, inner strength rarely seen in women of her time.

So what would Al Gore choose if he had a book club? Gore named Stendhal's The Red and the Black, a 19th century classic chock full of adultery, betrayal, and moral vacuity, as his favorite book on a recent broadcast of Oprah. It's a bit shocking of a choice, given his wife and running mate's position on clean, wholesome literature. Listen and decide for yourself the merit of this presidential pick.

Exhausting
Revisado: 04-04-18
I love Davina Porter and I like long books of historical fiction. These are the reasons for purchasing this book. Although Porter delivered, the book becomes boring, with repetitive and loooonnnggg descriptions of characters feelings and mind set.

This book, like ALL of his work, is a magnificent portrayal of the human spirit. Beautifully descriptive with fully formed characters, his books become addictive - and I am a voracious reader.
