The first part of the book is interesting. As we get closer to present day it is a glorification of anyone conservative and a hit piece on the more liberal minded presidents.

powerful and thought provoking
Revisado: 11-06-23
After finishing his book I think Cory Allen has a future in writing. When I was done with this book, I felt like I was saying good-bye to a friend. His writing style is engaging, honest, and endearing. It is an easy read that reveals a lot about the writer’s most intimate life details in an easy style kind of way. In reading a few other reviews, I was glad to see nobody was offended by his honestly in describing his love life. This book shows a detailed and honest analysis of one man’s journey through the military, police force, and secret service training. It shows how he rises from his childhood to become a confident, gay male working in a governmental field where he is the minority. In the end I honestly liked and respected Corey Allen. I hope he pursues writing I think he has much to offer. If there was a small negative here, I was not as impressed with the performance as I have been with nearly all the audiobooks, but it did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.

Historia
Roger and Penny Scaggs seemed a poster couple for family values. Evangelical Christians living in booming Austin, Texas, in the mid-1990s, they were respected leaders in their church and community. As Roger diligently worked his way up the high-tech corporate ladder, Penny kept a pristine home and coached similarly devout young women on how to be perfect wives. But on a windy March evening, this godly woman met the devil head-on.

well preformed totally engaging.
Revisado: 08-17-23
An even handed and fair approach to a tragic story albeit predicable story. Wife appears to actually embrace her life has a subservient wife and even teaches classes to other young wives, on how to be, in my personal opinion, a doormat, but in the evangelical world. I guess . it is called having a "godly" marriage. Many bible verses used as basis for mandating a man to be the "head" of the household and dismissive of the wife as near childlike. She needs to bury who she is, any intellect she has, any desires and aspirations need to be subverted so as to only serve her man, and please him, all with a plethora of bible verses to back up that world view. I must say cringe worthy to listen to sometimes. As hard as she tried to make that work, it is an untenable life. And so it unraveled. If you are at all a fan of true crime stories, this is not an uncommon ending, for people that live in the evangelical bubble.

A tense psychological thriller that will pull you in with tension and keep you guessing. I did not see the twisted ending coming. Some have accurately described it as Hitchcock-ian. Reading other reviews, seems some are offended by the sometimes colorful language..but honestly it totally fits with the character and it not even the least bit gratuitous or offensive.
I will not say it was my most favorite listen but probably in my top ten. The performance was stellar. I understand the author's next book is even better. I am a Sharon Doering fan now.

Tony has always looked out for his younger brother, Nick. So when he's called to a hospital bed where Nick is lying battered and bruised after a violent sexual assault, his protective instincts flare, and a white-hot rage begins to build. As a small-town New England lawyer, Tony's wife, Julia, has cases involving kids all the time. When Detective Rice gets assigned to this one, Julia feels they're in good hands. Especially because she senses that Rice, too, understands how things can quickly get complicated. Very complicated.

Stephen King echos my review of this debut novel: “THE DAMAGE pulled me in from the first page with smart narration, characters I cared about, a hold-your-breath plot, and a terrific final twist. Put this one high on your summer list.” Stephen King
The author's debut novel characters tackles a sensitive and often taboo subject. It does have a description of a violent act but does not focus on the brutality any more than necessary to get the point across. The characters wrestle with deeply nuanced issues of what it means to love family and what we would do to protect them.

a memoir with heart and compassion;.
Revisado: 08-17-22
I did not read the reviews before I listened to the book, but knew it was a NYT bestseller (as it should be), and had heard Dr Harper on a few interviews. When I finished the book I immediately knew how the reviews would go....the right leaning conservatives would character her stories as "preachy" , because she related a few instances where this Harvard educated well credentialed doctor was clearly disrespected because she has extra melanin in her skin. She tells her story honestly and compassionately without a trace of martyrdom. It was just her journey she is just sharing it with us. . If yoga and or meditation help you get through the stresses of her profession, and made her a kinder and more compassionate person, not sure why that has to be condemned. There was not a scintilla of preaching! Just what worked for her. She had a pretty horrible, abusive childhood, one many of us would not have had what it took to pull ourselves out of and become the professionally successful caring person she became. There was no patting herself on the back, just a story that maybe gives other people hope whom may have had similar backgrounds. She is a gifted writer and I hope she can continue to share more of her life and insights with us in future books. I am a fan. She makes the world a better place.

Captivating
Revisado: 12-21-21
Generally I do not enjoy the stories when the author reads his own book, since good writers are not necessarily good performers..but Anderson Cooper makes his historical account of his ancestors engrossing. Since he is a serious journalist, so all was well researched and the darker moments of his family history not candy coated. It is both serious and light-hearted. So easy to listen. His story chronicles not just his family history but gives us a glimpse into the lives of the uber rich and their gradual loss of fortune. Well worth the listen.

what a waste of time. I got through a few chapters and just asked to return it. Seriously?I need a book for little helpful hints like "make double meals and freeze them to save time next time you are in a hurry"? Everything felt like little "helpful" household hints regurgitated from a women's magazine at the grocery store check out. Hardly anything new or insightful.

could not finish it
Revisado: 01-01-21
did not read the other reviews before I downloaded this book, but once I started it, I sensed early on an OH SO smug and self righteous sermon was coming soon, so I abandoned it. Then I read the reviews and it confirmed what I suspected . so glad I did not waste any more of my time. Too many other great books to enjoy, this needs to be labeled better. It is religious, and the author has an agenda. It was well performed so this is in no way a review of the reader...just eye rolling material.
