Historia
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Inside a narcissistic mind
Revisado: 04-02-25
Suzanne Collins does a scary-good job with the self assurance of the narcissistic mind and elevating the questions relevant to ruling a formerly democratic populous. I love the world she has created in Panem and the different takes she has taken in narration. I would love to see additional characters stories come to life, like Finnick Odair!

Historia
As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

Inspired story to inspire
Revisado: 03-30-25
A hero takes many forms, and Haymitch is a primo antihero. It’s a relevant take on the Panem universe (future?) to inspire folks to not just be hero’s, like Katniss, but to recognize the importance of the mentor, and how painful their story can be - but also the ultimate satisfaction of their work. Really enjoyed.

My favorite book of my favorite series
Revisado: 09-15-23
Who needs fiction, when the lives of our ancestors are so interesting? If you want a deep dive into every movement of Voltaire’s life, this is not the book for you. But if you want to know how Voltaire became Voltaire, and how he impacted the world and cultures around him, you cannot beat this narrative.

Historia
The Age of Reason Begins brings together a fascinating network of stories in the discussion of the bumpy road toward the Enlightenment. This is the age of great monarchs and greater artists - on the one hand, Elizabeth I of England, Philip II of Spain, and Henry IV of France; on the other, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Montaigne, and Rembrandt. It also encompasses the heyday of Francis Bacon, Galileo, Giordano Bruno, and Descartes, the fathers of modern science and philosophy.

So much happened during the time period discussed that it’s hard to describe the amount of knowledge obtained by listening to this book. It’s my third reading and it’s just as much of a treat as the first.

Third times a charm
Revisado: 08-19-23
I’m on my third listen though of this series. I’ve listened in different orders each time. Each time I finish one, I just simply can’t wait to start the next. The Durants are master storytellers and hit both big picture and small, cultural elements of the period. Love it.

Historia
The Age of Napoleon, the 11th and final volume of the Story of Civilization, surveys the amazing chain of events that wrenched Europe out of the Enlightenment and into the age of democracy. In this masterful work, listeners will encounter the French Revolution from the storming of the Bastille to the guillotining of the king; and the revolution's leaders - Danton, Desmoulins, Robespierre, and Saint-Just - all cut down by the reign of terror they inaugurated.

Such a wonderful encapsulation of the storytelling and historiography of Will and Ariel Durant. Is also a wonderful place to start in the series, as you can then go back and see what led to the icon that was Napoleon.

Historia
Between 1937 and 1945, approximately 55 million people perished in the series of interrelated conflicts known as the Second World War. No continent was left untouched, no ocean unaffected. The war led to the eclipse of Europe and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers; ushered in the atomic age; produced, in the Holocaust, the most horrific crime ever committed in the history of Western civilization, and led to the end of Europe's colonial empires around the world.

Great info condensed well
Revisado: 05-14-23
The Second World War was such a behemoth that an overview style like this typically doesn’t work for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed these lectures. I do think the lecturer misspeaks a few too many times and creates a little bit of confusion but overall really good.

Here in a single volume is the entire, unabridged recording of Gibbon's masterpiece. Beginning in the second century A.D. at the apex of the Pax Romana, Gibbon traces the arc of decline and complete destruction through the centuries across Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a thrilling and cautionary tale of splendor and ruin, of faith and hubris, and of civilization and barbarism. Follow along as Christianity overcomes paganism... before itself coming under intense pressure from Islam.

It’s a classic work of history for a reason. Incredibly researched for the time, and put together in a way that contributes to the listener’s overall understanding of the complex reasons why an empire falls.

Historia
On January 6, 2021, insurgents stormed the U.S. Capitol, an act of domestic terror without parallel in American history, designed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. In a resolution six months later, the House of Representatives called it "one of the darkest days of our democracy," and established a special committee to investigate how and why the attack happened. Celadon Books, in collaboration with The New Yorker, presents the committee's final report, the definitive account of January 6th and what led up to it.

Must listen for American citizens
Revisado: 01-21-23
I mean, what is more important than the safety of our democracy? I appreciate the ability to listen to this report, as there is small chance I would read it in physical book format. Watched all the hearings on TV, but this report adds new details and lots of new names to the list of anti-democratic actors in our government. Highly recommend!
