Poetic Romance
Revisado: 04-30-25
I am rating “Looking Glass Friends” by E.L. Neve, narrated by B.J. Harrison, a 4/5 stars as I enjoyed listening to this story, the narration was very well done, and the book overall had a very original poetic feel to it. It does contain sexual content and themes of abuse. In a nutshell, this story is about two people who are currently in marriages that leave them feeling incomplete in different ways; they then find a soulmate who fills all the missing cracks in their lives. I would recommend this book for people who are looking for a classically romantic story with deep character connection and reflection; as a note, I would not recommend this book to those that find cheating a triggering topic.
This novel had the flow of a classic romantic poem, despite the contemporary setting, making it very enjoyable to listen to. The editing done in this book is very well done; it is clear that the author and the editor were on the same page with the consistent feel of the whole story. The narrator did a fantastic job reading in a cadence that I believe the written word was intended.
The story was very thought-provoking, and I found myself reevaluating my own life decisions as I listened. The only thing I would have changed would be including more in-person conversations with our main characters. The majority of their face-to-face conversations seemed awkward and uncomfortable and it would have been nice to watch their chemistry in written word translated into their in-person interactions.
I appreciate that we got the viewpoints of others, as it was beneficial to get a more complete idea of our main characters and the struggles they go through in their daily lives. Having the other spouses’ point of view made the mirror imaging of their lives much more visible. The main characters recognize each other as having the same mental framework but do not see how their marriages also mirror each other in different ways. I liked the clear water view that the main characters saw each other in; it is satisfying watching people interact that can understand each other on multiple levels without over-explanation.

Great!

I loved this book so much. It was so ungodly refreshing to have characters that communicated like adults. A CNC which is actually RP, where the consent is guaranteed ahead of time with safe words? Stellar. 10/10 very hot with a significant amount of warm fuzzy vibes.
I liked the dynamics of the world, the vampire biology, the writing, and the performance!

Very on brand! ❤️

I love this. Like other books from Mhairi McFarlane, I love that this main story revolves around Harriet facing a larger issue in her life, and it forces her to heal herself and deal with many surrounding problems. All with the undercurrent of a blossoming romance. This author always has a way of making me laugh and cry in the same book! These really make me think about the way I see and tackle problems in my own life. Very well done! The voice actress did a great job too! Very quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Love it!
Revisado: 04-13-23
I love this book, absolutely one of my favorites. For me, I think it perfectly captures the feeling of having the rug taken out from under your feet, stumbling repeatedly, while still having to look and act like a rational full adult person, the grief mindsets are all there for me. The manic petty plans of the fake romance, the self reflections, the rational conclusions about the good things in life, and the tough decisions that need to be made on your own and the steps it takes to make them. I know it’s a romance book but I always read it as more of a self help book with how much work she puts into building herself back up throughout the story.
I’m not British so I didn’t understand all the jokes but I loved the narrator and I’ve read this book many times and still laugh out loud every time.
Absolutely love it.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Loved it

This book was amazing, I had to pause it a few times to process it because every time I thought I had a pretty good idea of where it was going, I was wrong.
I don’t know if I would call it a thriller, more suspenseful than anything, it’s a slow build.
