Historia
It was a crucial piece of intel, and now they had coordinates for the RNS Freedom. The allies' next move could change the course of everything, but there was just one question: Was the Viceroy's final card to play enough to save the Republic? The Gallentine Emperor isn't pleased. Could Viceroy Miles Hunt lose his place of influence? Sakura and her team had discovered an ancient portal, but it wasn't like the others. After being sealed for thousands of years, would opening it unlock Pandora's box? Were some secrets better left undiscovered? Or would the answers there save them all?

Historia
The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

Great ideas, uneven narration
- De depthpsychologist en 12-09-20
Normally a KSR fan, but this needs an editor badly
Revisado: 01-10-24
I knew exactly what kind of book I was getting into when I purchased this. It wasn't going to be the usual KSR, ala "Red Mars." I came in with an open mind though.
The content is rich in detail, which I also don't mind in any novel. But there is such a thing as "too rich." As in seemingly endless passages with detail that becomes excruciating and unnecessary. I found my mind wandering off to more important things, like what to have for dinner or whether I want to do laundry today or tomorrow.
Trimmed down, I think it would be a fine listen. The group narration is excellent.

Enjoying the Solar Clipper series so far
Revisado: 06-22-23
I'm about halfway through book two. I read tons of military space ScfFi with tons of pew-pew-pew and menacing alien critters. This has none of that. You might call it pedestrian, since it's basically the ins-and-outs of buying a freighter and fleshing out the crew, but the characters get a lot of development as well as the story universe they're placed in. It's a nice break from the usual blow shit up stories. A palette cleanser of sorts. Perfect for the mind-numbing two hours a day I spend commuting. I'm enjoying the ride.

Humanity has left Earth behind and is rapidly expanding throughout the galaxy under the banner of The Union, a white supremacist government who racially ‘purified’ the human race hundreds of years in the past. Living on the fringe of this twisted Fourth Reich society, Dark Horse - the only Black man in the Union - commandeers a vessel and scours the galaxy for his missing teammates under the guise of an Exo-Hunter, seeking out exo-planets to satiate the Union’s need for colonization.

Joel Shepard was new to me before I started this series. It’s amazingly well developed. Great world building. Engaging characters and arcs. Spot-on narration. I’ve been binging my way through it, happily.

Really Interesting Listen
Revisado: 01-22-23
Olan Thorensen is a new author to me, and I'm glad I gave him a try. This book doesn't fall into the more common "science fiction" categories. Yeah, there are some aliens (and not in any detail) at the very beginning, but that part is just a segue into the real story; a man from 21st century Earth displaced to a new planet that is somewhere between 1500-1700 in technology.
It's been done before. Everyone from Mark Twain to David Weber has taken a shot at the premise. Olan does a very nice job with it, and I didn't find any of the 17+ hours feeling like "fluff" or in need of an editor to shorten in.
On to book 2 now :-)

Revisado: 11-22-22
Pretty thoroughly enjoying this. If you don't enjoy SciFi & Fantasy overlapping, probably not for you. I don't mind, and it's a fun break from the usual military space battle stuff. Nick's background shows through, avoiding the cringe-worthy military bits that pepper books written by people with zero exposure to an actual military.

Historia
The Iron Wolves are a company of legionnaires whose legendary exploits date back to the Savage Wars. When they are invited to be guests of honor at a ceremony on a small, backwater planet, they look forward to some precious time away from the constant conflicts of galaxy's edge. But when a neighboring country invades, disrupting the ceremony and killing innocents, the Wolves are forced to make an impossible decision. Aid a people pleading for their protection...or obey the cynical orders of their senate to stand down and see how the dust settles.

Everything from the writing to the narration is garbage. This junk is phoned in for a buck. I’ve (god help me) listened to and wasted money on two slices hoping it gets better. It doesn’t.

So, at book 4 this starts to not suck
Revisado: 10-29-22
I'll be honest. Books 1-3 felt phoned-in. They're just generic space battle crap and I put up with it as a filler for my 2-hour daily commute to work and back. Background noise.
This one feels a lot different, like maybe somebody gives a shit about their reputation as an author.

Caveat: this needs to be listened to in the context that it’s from 1961. Some of it is charmingly dated, but overall holds up well. The most glaring thing for a listener 5 decades later is the casual misogyny tossed in.
