1975 is a time of change in America. The Vietnam War is ending. Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier. And in the smalltown of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing. When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, the most unlikely hero emerges—Patch, a local boy, who saves the girl, and, in doing so, leaves heartache in his wake. Patch and those who love him soon discover that the line between triumph and tragedy has never been finer. And that their search for answers will lead them to truths that could mean losing one another.

Character development
Revisado: 12-30-24
The characters developed slowly in my heart as their poverty of friends and family drew them closer to a fullness of love and happiness. Slowly, they healed, as healing often does.

Historia
Dana Trent is only a preschooler the first time she uses a razor blade to cut up weed and fill dime bags for her schizophrenic father, King. While King struggles with his unmedicated psychosis, Dana’s mother, the Lady, a cold and self-absorbed woman whose personality disorders rule the home, guards large bricks of drugs from the safety of their squalid trailer. But when the Lady impulsively plucks Dana from the Midwest and moves the two of them south, their fresh start results in homelessness and bankruptcy.

what a story! But not a "story", which is often synonymous with "lie", in southern speak. This one is true.

Honesty and hope in the midst of a very challenging childhood
Revisado: 05-05-24
Being from western Kentucky, I could relate to Dana’s story surrounding a love of home and family and also her need to make it a part of her story, not the whole of it. The author’s perseverance and grit are inspiring. I highly recommend this touching and well narrated memoir.
