Darren Hayes is simply one of the most lovable humans on the planet, and this book reaffirmed that for me.

Throughout the 90s and early 2000s, my musical tastes revolved mostly around the angrier sound of punk and indie female artists, with a few exceptions. Savage Garden / Darren Hayes was my “guilty pleasure”. Not that I ever felt guilty for listening, but the listening experience conjured up feelings for me that I can only describe as “guilty pleasure” like feelings.

Listening to the details of his life and how it showed up in his songwriting, it makes so much sense to me now how my daughter and I became such huge fans. His music was an escape from a life that had many parallels to his. And his songwriting has greatly influenced many aspects of my own.

When my daughter was 5 we spent spring break up in San Francisco and attended an album listening party. Meeting him at that event, and the extra kindness he showed her at a time that was very tumultuous for us, he created a beautiful bright memory that still outshines the darkness of what we were going through then. The Do You Remember Tour show at the Wiltern was a wonderful opportunity for us to create another lovely memory together.

Thank you for being you, Darren Hayes. You are truly lovable 🩷

Sometimes I wonder what it is about a certain songwriter that connects me in a way that others don’t. She is one of my all time favorites and now I know why. She is amazing on so many levels. I absolutely loved hearing her story told in her words and her voice.

I’ve read many books on addiction and this is by far the most insightful and inspiring I’ve read so far.

Good, but not what I was expecting

There are many, many helpful tips in this book. I bookmarked several action steps and will definitely go back and work through those. However, this book seems to be aimed at people who work in sales. The later chapters do cover things like health and fitness and relationships, and much of the advice can be applied to those of us seeking self-discipline in other arenas (art, music, etc.) I was expecting something a little different, though. Overall, a helpful book.

This book is extremely well-researched and thorough. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their overall health. My only complaint is... I cringed every time the narrator said “triathalon” instead of “triathlon”. Otherwise, darn near perfect book and narration.

I absolutely adore Seth Godin. A few years ago a friend recommended The Icarus Deception. I credit that book with helping me leap back into music and songwriting after a 20-year (or so) hiatus. Those closest to me recognize the joy and cathartic release my music gives me. Lately I’ve been struggling with “the lizard brain” again. Leap First is only the second Seth Godin book I’ve read, but now I want to read (or, listen, cause ya know, ain’t nobody got time for that) every single one. Thank you for the inspiring words, Mr. Godin! And thank you, Audible, with helping me take multitasking to new levels!

I’m so glad I bought the Audible version of this book. Though I also appreciate the content, the author’s accent and manner of speaking is what really pulled me in.
