Great concept, but poor execution kills it.
Revisado: 09-27-15
The story and concept are great. Execution suffers here. Narration is good, but there are too many problems with the basics.
Captain Mac sounds like a fun character, all the crew starts out so. But they never develop. In one scene near the end of the story, one of the crew dies. Its a twin, and obviously the other twin should be devastated. But the whole "we are here for you" scene is just gratuitous- it doesnt fit with the characters. It COULD fit, but the author doesnt do enough development with the people on the ship for it to really jive.
Another scene and they are fighting in zero g with some robot thing.. They shoot it and disable it and it "crashes and skids along the floor" -- zero g though, remember? The characters and the robot were floating - the characters still are after the battle, but the dead robot develops gravity?
And what was the point of the admirals story line?
These are just a few examples of the MANY problems. Again, this is a great concept. But execution suffers, this is more of a story outline or screen play than an actual book.

Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Cracked me up
Revisado: 05-16-14
This was clever. I enjoyed listening to the story, and t he fact that Will Wheaton from Star Trek was the narrator was the icing on the cake.
The only "issue" I'd have with the book was the narration. The "he said" and "she said" after very bit of dialog was just harsh to listen too. Prior to this book, I'd just finished "The Android's Dream", another comedic book by Scalzi as well and didn't notice this.
it was worth the credit, though it's a shame I was able to complete the book in just a few days on my daily commute.

Change of narrators is jarring
Revisado: 04-11-14
This is an excellent story. I've just finished the last book in the series, and I'm overall quite happy with it. It's almost like listening to an epic movie or TV.
The only complaint I have here, is the change in narrators. David does a great job, but it was HARD moving from previous books into this one. After spending so much time listening to the previous narrator (3 LONG books!), the switch in narration was just hard to swallow.
I was immediately put in mind of Safehold, and the absolute travesty that entire series has become in audio book format, with the constant change in narrators.
However, this isn't about the abortion that is Safehold, this is about the Seven Suns.
Thankfully, this is the only narrator change. But it was hard to get used to.
The worst was in pronunciation. Tas-e-ah, vs Tas-i-e-ah, or the pronunciation of the robot name e.g. "K. R." the letters, where as David says "Kay-Ar" or "Goo" instead of "G. U." are good examples.
I really had to try on this one, but I'm glad I stuck it out. By about Book #5 I'd gotten used to it and was able to go back and enjoy the story.

Historia
Humanity pushed its way to the stars—and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out. Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever.

Truly great book.. but READ IT - don't LISTEN!
Revisado: 01-29-14
This is really a great series. But Please don't waste your time on this as an audible listen.
While the story is excellent, the narrator changes to someone new in book 3, again in book 5, and again .. and again.. and each narrator doesn't even bother to TRY to pickup the same accents, or even pronounce the words the same as the first one. No two books are alike as you listen..
I gave up after I heard the first 30 minutes of book 5 (or was it 6?) and couldn't take it any more. It ruined a great story for me.
If you're the kind of person who doesn't mind having the names of countries pronounced differently between books, characters who at one point have Irish accents in book 1, move to British in book 3 and Midwestern in book 5.. or "manly" characters suddenly sounding falsetto and effeminate and who's inflections entirely change as you move between books - go ahead, this is a great series.
If you DO mind that - go pickup the Kindle or paperback versions instead.

This is a classic, but it was tedious to listen to
Revisado: 01-29-14
This was a really tedious book to listen to. The narrator did a poor job here. Both the voices (especially of the women) and the speed or "flow" seemed to be off somehow. Production quality seemed to be very good (quiet recording, no hiss or background noises, etc).
The entire book was about Lazarus Long's love life -- and while that's to be expected somewhat with the title "Time Enough for Love", this was really just too much. The constant tales of how women throwing themselves at Laz -- from his own pseudo-daughters, step-children, and sisters (cloned from his own cells), the orgies with his "family", hell he even goes back in time to sleep with his mother -- that was just too much!
ADD to that the love with an AI who turns itself into a woman, a funky genetic set of twins (brother/sister) who wind up marrying each other, and the orgies on homesteads.. it was just too much.
NONE of it is graphic mind, it's.. well, it's DRY as hell when it's talked about, and it's a full 90% of the book!
I understand the premise, and I even got the message - sexual freedom, no religion, enlightened society, science and math is king, genetics, logical reasoning should prevail, love (sexual, familial, and romance) are the only reasons to live and make life interesting, etc, etc. But enough!
This is one of the few books that the authors message is easily gotten.. simply because it's constantly pounded into you, over, and over, and over, and over again. Really, the first oh.. 45 minutes, and the last 45 minutes are the only bits worth listening to. An abridged version would have been much better.
I've read/listened to other Heinlein works in the past, and usually enjoyed them. But this was.. wow. this was really tough, It's very rare that I actually get done with an audio book and feel like I was tortured (I've listened to 100's of books at this point).. but I did with this one.. The constant sexual escapades, tales of women throwing themselves at him, the somewhat creepy ancestor worship, and the constant focus on sex combined with a deadpan, unnatural narration just made this a horrible combination.
There were enjoyable parts here - talking laz back from using the kill switch, bits about the ride back with the brother/sister, the homesteading part, the time travel, and even some of the philosophical discussion around love.. all of those were fine. Not action packed (actually, no action at all really), but it made for a good bit to flush out Laz's character. But the book could be about 80% shorter and been just as good.

Fantastic
Revisado: 04-20-09
This is a fantastic series. It took me a little bit to get used to the narrator's voice. But he really is a great fit as a narrator.
The series reminds me a lot of the 'Honor Harrington' series. So if you liked those, then you'll like these (and vice versa). There is a little more focus on the technical details of battle in the 'Lost Fleet' series than the 'Honor Harrington' ones, and it really brings a sense of realism.
I cannot wait for the next book!

Who edited this thing?
Revisado: 10-05-08
It took me awhile to get into this story. The Narrator's voice is a little.. odd for this kind of book, but by the end of book 1 I was fully hooked, and looking forward to picking up book 2.
The story is still good - but the editing on book 2 is HORRIBLE. The reading stops and re-starts. You can hear where the narrator coughs, or his voice gives out a bit and he restarts reading.. at one point, he even laughs "Er.. I assume that's trees.. treas.." and then starts re-reading the sentence again.
Wow.
Great story, horrible recording. Someone was sleeping at the wheel here.
