Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College – Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is – unless she betrays the man she loves.

Impossibly Impeccable
Revisado: 10-20-24
I have never in my 40+ years of reading and listening have found an author to so perfectly balance story-plot-characters- and utter justified brutality as Rebecca Yarros. THIS is THE series I will recommend to everyone. Especially this Graphic Audio version. I am certain the other version is done well. But I cannot fathom listening to any other version that is without the sound effects and FULL voice cast. Rebecca Yarros has mastered “leave ‘em wanting more”. I eagerly await the next installment in this epic story!

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.

Brutal and Beautiful coexisting
Revisado: 07-22-24
First this is my first GraphicAudio. I have listened to the theatrical narration of Battlefield Earth, that was my first Audible btw, and had not found its equal in that term till now. This first part (though no clue why they needed to split up except for money) was a surprisingly engaging and intriguing story. Set in a completely original fantasy setting.
Which in itself can be a liability if you do not have the strength to describe your world. This world is so detailed and thought out I was very impressed and yes at times the story can be brutal, but it fits within this world. I found myself engrossed in the characters and eventually the dragons we get to meet. Everything feels genuine and well fleshed out. This is a rare 3 5 star rating for me. Cannot recommend high enough and I’m not even at the end of this book yet.

This was the perfect sequel to Before the Storm and prequel to True Colors. While you didn’t need to play either, it helps to have a connection to the series beforehand. I will now ALWAYS recommend to everyone to listen to this before playing TC.

Brilliant with a twist I honestly didn’t see coming
Revisado: 11-23-22
The new narrator Emily Shaffer took a short time to get used to with her sounding younger than I would have preferred. Now I like her and glad they kept her for the rest of the series.
Now the SPOILER part of my review.
The only part of the story I didn’t like and felt dragged on for to long was her time under Strigoi Dimitri’s thumb. I get it’s to show the powerful allure and danger of their bite. It just felt like knocking down a strong young woman for “reasons”. Now it does work out well story wise, but I was bored and annoyed for that whole part. But what makes me take notice of a story is when you can really catch me by surprise. It seems every story HAS to have a twist nowadays. But if EVERY story HAS to have a twist then the excited shock when it gets revealed is not a big deal since you were expecting it. Like Dimitri still being alive. But the bomb about who Rose’s dad is… THAT did surprise me. Which shouldn’t’ve the clues were there, but the misdirection was done quite well. I look forward to the next book.

A bit predictable but still worth the time.
Revisado: 09-23-22
First let me say this about this narrator Khristine Hvam: Her voices for the characters were distinct so I didn't ever get confused who was talking. And she was good at giving them personality and can inject emotion into her acting. Which alot of narrators have trouble doing as they seem to just be reading words off a script. Now the two nitpicks I do have are 1. Dimitri is Russian and the previous narrator Stephanie Wolf did an excellent job of showing this. Khristine Hvam does not. Not a lick of a Russian accent in evidence. And 2. Khristine Hvam makes Rose sound too young for me. Stephanie Wolf had the right idea of a sassy 17 with a sometimes sultry voice. Khristine Hvam's Rose always sounded like a newly minted thirteen year-old trying to sound like an adult. But I got used to it and have come to like it actually. Pity they change narrators AGAIN in Book 4, but I'll see if I like the new woman she brings to life.
NEXT
**SPOILERS!** Seriously why are you reading a review if you don't want **SPOILERS!**.
The progression of the story moved along at a good pace. Though some common plot clichés were VERY evident. Rose keeping her relationship to Dimitri a secret even from Alissa is one. Then there's Mason's ghost that was obviously a factor of Roses' Shodowkissed nature and that she told no one again not even Alissa was frustrating and an eyeroll. Keeping the Queens plan from Alissa didn't make any sense to me. All of this is for no other reason than to cause tension and stress for Rose. Alot of this would have been interesting if she had told Alissa Christian and Dimitri everything that was going on and been able to work out solutions together. The whole bit about "Knowledge is power" and "Forewarned is forearmed" needs to be the mantra for Rose. But the biggest problem was how LOUDLY they telegraphed the ending. I knew since the scene in the second book when they went shopping that someone was going to be unwillingly turned Strigoi (I just thought is was going to be Mason). And after Rose and Dimitri made love, I knew it was going to be him. It was kind of like the old cliché in movies of the cop just one week from retirement getting killed saving someone. If anyone didn't figure out he was going to get turned after they had finished talking about all their bright Future plans... well I feel ya weren't paying attension.
I did like the idea of Rose absorbing Alissa's darkness and it came at a great cost (but again Rose could have told Alissa and they could've shared the burden and thus been more mindful & careful). Rose and her Mother calling an uneasy truce and the awkwardness of trying to find a new common ground was interesting to explore and wished they'd spent more time on that. I loved the part Where Rose said she was Proud of her mother right then. I hope they say in book 4 what punishment the Moroi students that caused the attack had gotten.
Well I still liked this one, but it was more obvious in the storytelling than the first two. So I find it the weakest of the 3 so far.
And that's my two cents. Spend it for what it's worth.

Where was this recorded?
Revisado: 11-14-21
The narrator did a decent British reading of this classic. I don’t recall all the songs in the book that are in this. And yes he sings them one of them for what seemed like five minutes. It was the studio that was tasked to do the recording I take issue with. A single college student could have done a more quality job. There several ambient sounds that intruded on the recording. Bass booming- as if someone had been pounding on the walls next door. Or outright VOICES in the background I.E. in Ch. 5 at 25m38s you can hear a woman talking as if in a hallway outside. For such a famous book series this was astounding this got approved for release and TBH insulting the lack of professionalism present in the quality of this recording. Very disappointed.

Good story engaging characters
Revisado: 09-16-21
While I wish it was longer, this was well worth the listen. Most stories try to stretch out the will they won’t they bit of a romance then end it when they finally admit their feelings. This had just the right amount of build up. I love the inclusion of the transgender Charlotte and look forward to the development of their romance. The action parts were on point nothing to say against them. But now the “singing” I don’t know if in the book the say the song lyrics or if that is something Galvin did. But I’d rather they actually sang. Those parts were the only cringe parts IMO.

Well umm...that happened
Revisado: 04-02-21
I’ll get to the review in a sec, for those that don’t want to read it all well the gist is... stick to Ready Player One cause I’m being generous with 2 stars on story.
Now it starts out great. Meaning it was like a awesome epilogue of RPO. BUT then Wade discovers the ONI and they do a fast forward time skip. Cline then decides basically to do a reset on everything, well not reset but “how bad can I make Wades life?” He could have had Sam come with Wade from the start and get to see their relationship grow. Then just the new quest didn’t have any stakes to start and it’s like Cline realized this and instead of rewriting the Anorak meeting at the start WITHOUT a time skip we get this. It felt shoehorned in. Then Cline had to find a way to de-power Wade like what they have to do to Superman in video games. My ears pricked up when they mentioned Planet Usagi (being a HUGE Sailor Moon otaku). After that seemed to be a paint by numbers “only this friend has specific knowledge of this part of the quest”. The mystery of the flashbacks was one of the only things interesting. The other being the VERY underutilized Low Five group. I thought he was going to go somewhere with that but nope. I guess Cline got tired at the end because hearing HOW the Low Five got the Dorkslayer would have been nice. I did like the whole bit about the Jewel of Acquisition. That was clever. And I found the rescue of Og exciting. Then Wade having to physically go out and save Sam and Og was awesome. Ultimately if Cline had ended it better it may ha salvaged this for me. Maybe he was leaving it up for a Ready Player Three but that bit about the Bug Red Button then NOTHING happened with that and oh btw you can create whatever life you want. Stuff them in a spaceship and nothing will happen to it on its long journey. Oh and y’all still screwed on Earth so... yea TOOTLES WE IMMORTAL DITCHES! This read more like a mostly bad fanfic trying to copy RPO. Stick to Ready Player One. Period.

Could be a Full and complete Epilogue. Or the start of a new adventure!
Revisado: 11-03-20
This was a brilliant beginning to what I hope will be another long running story in the House of Night series. There’s just so much content that can be explored. With a spin-off covering other Kevins journey. But even if this is just a one or two book Epilogue to the series, a kind of “where are they now”, I’d have no problems with it. As it was written with a clear beginning-middle-end, with just a hint to something more... maybe. I loved that. Best book series I have had the joy to listen to.
