Long winded. Slow. Low quality content. Wordy. Could have written the whole book in one chapter and 20 pages

At the centre of this story is struggle and toil mixed with overwhelming acts of kindness and generosity.

The most interesting aspect for me was that of Mr Streeting’s parents. Both east Londoners but one with a strong Tory ideology and family tradition, the other certainly more traditional labour. The biography is almost a microcosm for the successes and failings of both value sets and perhaps also a reminder of why it’s good to have both in a healthy society.

The authors tone is generous and balanced throughout - even when tackling some of the harder issues - which I think reflects the best qualities of him as a politician today. He actually does a good job of keeping political pulpit preaching out of the text.

Read it if you want to learn more about who Wes Streeting is.

Read it if you want to learn or be reminded why east Londoners often get referred to as the salt of the earth.

Read it if you want to be reminded of many of new labours failing whilst in government last time around.

Love Chris Evan’s, but this book isn’t really about him and there aren’t many life lessons learnt if that’s what you’re looking for.

First half of the book was broad, light and great but second half is all about him running a marathon (and not much else). Slightly bizarre - I’d stop when he starts to talk about it for the first time if I were listening to this again.

I feel like this book should never have been written. He only has a story of failure to tell which would actually be interesting if he could bring himself to be honest about it.

Good leaders own failure and just stop there. He owns it (for about 5 seconds) then deflects it onto someone/anyone else. Toxic leadership and classic Harvard MBA er. He has an excuse for everything.

First point I’d make is this is now a bit dated. If you are interested in the new Labour machine there are some gems in there. But Campbell has got a lot of stuff wrong here (with the benefit of hindsight) in terms of the businesses and people that he praises - who we all know now are failures.

I think that strikes at the heart of the problem here. Campbell is talking a lot about sportsmen and entrepreneurs, but he is neither and that makes this book a pretty shallow retelling of other peoples stories with little further insight from the author.

This book reads like something published by a management consultant to promote their work. I think the most revealing part of the story is when Eddie says that he packaged and sold his coaching IP when working for the Brumbies. I don't think he's looked back since then!

Avid rugby fans will want to read it just because he's lived through interesting times and this does shed some light, but I'll give you an example of the way he tells his stories. Scotland v England 2019 ---> Scotts come back from 31 - 0 down. Eddie talks about how fantastic George Ford was off the bench and what a fantastic decision he made to bring him on to save the gave, we then roll off into a story about Fergie Time and being patient about scoring in the last 5 mins. But the real story there was Owen Farrell's leadership as Captain, as it had been throughout the South Africa tour that summer. Eddie doesn't touch it.

There are loads of these type of key gaps. If you know your rugby and read this, you'll be left scratching your head about why he doesn't mention anything that calls into question his judgement - then you'll remember this review!
