Chicago Fun
Revisado: 02-22-24
I can't get enough of Richard Peck books. I love the characters and how the country folks help the city folks and vice-versa. It was also interesting to learn about the Columbian Exposition.

Historia
Sarah Gilchrist has fled London and a troubled past to join the University of Edinburgh's medical school in 1892, the first year it admits women. She is determined to become a doctor despite the misgivings of her family and society, but Sarah quickly finds plenty of barriers at school itself: professors who refuse to teach their new pupils, male students determined to force out their female counterparts, and - perhaps worst of all - her female peers who will do anything to avoid being associated with a fallen woman.

Great Mystery

Very well written Victorian Era mystery with feminist bent. Fallen debutant looks for sanctuary at Medical school, but also finds herself investigating a prostitute'sno murder.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Ah-mazing!
Revisado: 09-22-22
Pilgrimage is the best. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ancient practice of Pilgrimage meets the 21st century. Harold Fry walks to a post box to mail a letter, but keeps going. He believes in walking to her hospice, he can save a former work colleague from terminal cancer.
Harold is a sympathetic and realistic character. So much so, I actually stopped listening for a couple of weeks. He reminded me of family members who also were grossly misunderstood, but I'm so glad I continued.
One of the most satisfying parts of this audible is the way the story unfolds. Rachel Joyce masterfully reveals events layer by layer like an onion. This kept me guessing until the satisfying end.
Jim Broadbent's narration enhances the story and your connection with the characters.
Well done all around!

It's true that Anna Trent is a supervisor in a chocolate factory...but that doesn't necessarily mean she knows how to make chocolate. And when a fateful accident gives her the opportunity to work at Paris's elite chocolatier Le Chapeau Chocolat, Anna expects to be outed as a fraud. After all, there is a world of difference between chalky, mass-produced English chocolate and the gourmet confections Anna's new boss creates.
