There is way too much that is terrible in this book to go over so I’m just going to say save yourself the trouble and read something else.

Not for me
Revisado: 11-12-20
Well... all's I can say is that this book is not for me. However if you are looking for a faith based mystery book where the mystery is solved by prayer and a book where gender rolls are solidly in place and unmoving, the leading man is pretty thick in the head, and the murderer's motivation is minimal this is going to be the book for you.

Could Have Been
Revisado: 11-05-20
This book could have been really great! I am a huge fan of the 'friends to lovers' trope (with my favorite being "Just one of the Groomsmen"). With the set up of two friends exiting high school and both competing for the same job the potential for greatness was there. However the payoff fell a little bit short for me as it turns out that the job they are both competing for is just an over the summer paid position and the complications of carrying on a long distance relationship is mentioned but never addressed in detail. In regards to the temp position at the library I felt the stakes were not high enough for their friendship to have dissolved as much as it did. If say Maya had been wanting the position as a means to switch over to becoming a full time librarian to fulfill some long time dream she had that would have been more impactful. As it stood I couldn't' understand why neither would talk of finding a different job or about potentially splitting hours at the library (since it seemed that the librarian valued both of them equally initially and had expressed sadness that there weren't enough funds for both). If their friendship was really as strong as they said why wouldn't they have talked about different options? Neither of them wanted to be librarians and you can't tell me that there was nothing else in the whole town that couldn't have satisfied either Maya's need for money and Connor's need for teaching kudos.
Jason and Kaylee really ended up getting the short end of the stick in this book too and I will say I got kinda of bored with the repetitious "Oh no I like you, but I set you up with X! Now what ever can I do? I can't tell you that I like you!" over and over and over again that came into play surrounding the addition of the aforementioned characters. Both Connor and Maya were ignoring Jason and Kaylee or otherwise using them as pawns in their dispute. I also felt that this was an un-necessary element that was added in because neither Jason or Kaylee really represented a threat to Maya & Connors relationship (as is evidenced by the ending and their helping throughout). Things that could have been further explored are what a college relationship would mean, or negotiating different working schedules when they had previously been used to working with one another all the time. That would have, in my opinion, made for stronger content.
In short, it had a lot of potential to be greatness as the bones of a great story where there but it got lost in repetition of the same things and talking points and fails to utilize more impactful dramatic themes.
Also, as a note the narration in this by the end had me wanting to tear my hair out. The narrators diction is not for me and if I hear the word library pronounced "lie-berry" one more time I think I will have an aneurism!

Historia
Judith Hampton was as beautiful as she was proud and loyal. Her dear Scottish friend from childhood was about to give birth, and Judith had promised to be at her side. But there was another reason for the journey from her bleak English home to the Highlands: to meet the father she had never known, the Laird Maclean. Nothing prepared her, however, for the sight of the Scottish barbarian who was to escort her into his land...Iain Maitland, laird of his clan, a man more powerfully compelling than any she had ever encountered.

The worst narration
Revisado: 09-24-20
This story is overall one I like. I don't really love the almost forced marriage aspect of it, but other than that I found it to be an enjoyable story. The narration on the other hand is, to me, awful. I cannot finish listening to this. All of the "women" sound liks they are 4 years old and the whole thing is done with this airy breathy voice. The narration is just not for me!

Most people know this book from the Academy Award-winning motion picture starring Winona Ryder. Now, introduce them to the sparkling American classic behind the movie: a charming portrait of the joys and hardships of the four sisters in Civil War New England. Separated by the war from their beloved parents, these "little women" struggle to find their place in the world.

Pretty Darn Good
Revisado: 09-09-20
Overall I really liked this book. There were points where it was a bit to preachy for my personal taste (though it is fitting with the times in which it was written) and I'm not keen on all the women having to give up their artistic pursuits (again fits with the time and expectations for women but I'm still not keen on it).
I will say though I have no idea why everyone hates on Amy. I found her to be an all together interesting character. Jo also had a temper and did horrible things to her so I don't see why the hate is all lumped on to Amy. Perhaps if I had read this as a kid I would have felt differently, but I like Amy.

The Outer Space Treaty prohibited nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons from being placed in or used from Earth’s orbit. What no one could imagine was that mankind would conceive of the simplest weapon ever deployed - one with extinction power - to launch from space. The military named this weapon “Rods from God". And yet, it is not nuclear, biological, or chemical. Two women drone pilots battle in outer space to defend their country from a rogue military element threatening to overthrow the government.

A Let Down
Revisado: 08-18-20
The thing is, I really wanted to like this book. The premise of two female drone pilots uncovering an extinction level weapon being used against the citizens of Earth is awesome and really up my ally. However, I just walked away feeling let down.
My biggest issue with the book is that we are told and not shown so much of the story. Most of it takes place in one "situation room" or another. For example, in chapter 18 Rebecca is relaying all of her information gathering and intel on the X37B and its just being explained over the phone. It is a missed opportunity to show her potentially in action gathering intel, getting in sticky situations and getting out of them. But instead its just a phone call.
We also don't really get to know our two main characters all that intimately. We are told about them in a passive way and learn about their histories, but we never get any insight into how they think or what they feel. Nothing. Also....there was no need for the detailed inclusion of Rebecca's rape. It could have been mentioned, but I don't think the blow by blow was needed. Also, also, why did Rebecca get sidelined towards the later half of the novel? Sam kind of took over as the primary character and I'm not 100% sure why that is.
Additionally, while I understand this is part of the Mark Rollins universe I felt the addition of Mark Rollins into this story didn't really add anything. It would have been more interesting to see these two women tackle their problems together with perhaps Mark as a backup character, mentioned but not given much page time. I found his addition to be as unnecessary as the two mentions of him being a cancer survivor and working out.
Overall I just feel let down by a book that had so much promise.

When Redwall was published in 1987 it catapulted author Brian Jacques to international stardom. And small wonder! This enthralling tale is jam-packed with the things we long for in a great adventure: danger, laughter, hairbreadth escapes, tragedy, mystery, a touch of wonder, a truly despicable villain, and a hero we can take to heart.

Does no one else mind the music?
Revisado: 08-14-19
Overall this was a pretty cute rendition of this story. I loved Warbeaks voice and Basil Stag Hare’s as well as the narrators. However there are two things that just drove me crazy. The first is the music that plays at the end of every chapter. I wouldn’t normally mind that but it plays right over the narration and makes it very difficult to hear what is going on at the chapter end. Additionally the voice of Cluny was horrible. I know that is just personal preference but I abhorred it. I could hardly understand him.

Historia
When Marilyn Monroe became famous in the 1950s, the world was told that her mother was either dead or simply not a part of her life. However, that was not true. In fact, her mentally ill mother was very much present in Marilyn's world and the complex family dynamic that unfolded behind the scenes is a story that has never before been told...until now.

Revisado: 08-06-19
I think this was well researched and overall very well put together. However that said, the consistent worship of Marilyn was a bit much to stomach. I would have preferred a more impartial presentation of her life.
