Historia
After studying art under Miss Drake, a renowned painter, Phoebe Radcliff is certain she can finally move beyond the childish mistake that’s kept her away from home. She is thrilled when Miss Drake employs her to complete a complicated ballroom renovation. Everything changes, however, the moment Miss Drake is murdered. With her last breath she imparts the location of a clue to Phoebe. Can the biggest secret of Avonthorpe Hall be true? Phoebe is tasked to finish her work in the ballroom by Miss Drake’s infuriatingly regimented yet all-too-handsome nephew, Lt. Graham Burke.

Not bad
Revisado: 04-17-25
The plot has all the makings of a good story: murder, potential theft, and romance. But it’s too long. An editor was needed to do some deep cutting of the wordiness to make it more crisp in the telling. Also, I wasn’t invested in the characters. We don’t get to know them well, and none are made out to be unique or interesting. Part of the problem is that it’s told in first person, which is often boring and limited in scope. All in all, it’s fine, and passes the time. But it won’t go on my to-read-again list.

Other collections have stood out more. These are fine to have playing in the background, but not memorable. I generally like Lindy Nettleton, but she gave us a few high squeaky ones this time.

Whispering narrator
Revisado: 04-02-25
This is a good series, and the mysteries are complex and well formed. This wasn’t my favorite, but it was still good. Now, for the bad part. I’m actually mad at the female narrator. Audio books are expensive. And narrators, producers, sound-booth engineers, whomever, should know that we actually need to be able to hear what’s being read. But the female narrator whispered through a substantial portion of her chapters. She was a bit louder in dialog, and she was super loud for some of the other voices. But if I increased the volume for her first-person story narrative, I got an ear splitting jolt when a lower-class person or a brash person spoke. So….up down, up down, up down throughout the whole book. I couldn’t just turn it on and go about other tasks because of this frustrating actress/studio problem. Yes, she was good at tone and mood, etc., but please, do not whisper audiobooks!

Because of the staccatic and up-ticking narrator, it took me a while to get into this. By the middle half, though, I was enjoying it.

Mrs. Harris is a salt-of-the-earth London charlady who cheerfully cleans the houses of the rich. One day, when tidying Lady Dant's wardrobe, she comes across the most beautiful thing she has ever seen in her life—a Dior dress. In all the years of her drab and humble existence, she's never seen anything as magical as the dress before her and she's never wanted anything as much before. Determined to make her dream come true, Mrs. Harris scrimps, saves, and slaves away until one day, after three long, uncomplaining years, she finally has enough money to go to Paris.

First one is heartwarming
Revisado: 03-27-25
The second story didn’t hold my tension as well, so I fast forwarded some parts and listened on a faster speed. Maybe it’s that the characters weren’t as endearing. And Mrs. Harris’ friend was more interesting when she played a smaller role, as in the first book. At any rate, the first story is very charming, and I’d remembered enjoying the movie too.

My first Barbara Cartland
Revisado: 03-16-25
I’ve long run out of well-written and original HRs. The ones left, or that are being pumped out now, all sound alike, have very basic and linear writing, and have modern phrasing. Nothing original. Same plots over and over. So when I saw this Barbara Cartland in a sale, I thought, “why the heck not. It can’t be any worse than what’s out there now.” But I was wrong. It sounded like all the others. Same old tropes. Same types of characters. It was okay enough to finish with some fast forwarding and a faster listening speed, but it wasn’t special, and it had too many internal thoughts for my taste.

Revisado: 03-12-25
I thought it was going to be fun. But a few chapters in, it started throwing in long bouts of repetitive internal thoughts and, my least favorite, over-explaining. I truly don’t need an explanation about what someone is reacting to that only happened one page ago. Ridiculous. I’m an adult…I can keep up. I played it on a fast speed and skipped through the tedious internal thoughts. There was modern phrasing. The narrator was very good. The sister’s relationship and some of the side characters were enjoyable. SPOILER: SPOILER: In between all those irritating sloppy writing habits, there was the typical sparring couple, a lustful MC, who was emotionally abusive up to the end, and unoriginal storylines. This book had some real disappointment in the main characters and a big ick on how they finally come together. TRIGGER WARNING: There is a disturbing callousness about a suicide that sounds almost gleeful at the end.

Not bad
Revisado: 03-09-25
Starts out great; bogs down a bit around the funeral. As usual, though, Ann Granger spins a good story. The narrators do not match. One is soft and slow, the other is louder and fast. Each decent in their own right, but I have to adjust speed and volume at each changeover.
