You Must Listen to This Book!

A much better performance than Ms Pike’s rendering of Pride and Prejudice. Her voices were far more believable.

A perfect narration of a perfect book

A very bland recording of a lively, animated story

I have read P and P at least a dozen times and have listened to many recordings. This is one of my least favorites. The voices lack distinction. At times it is difficult to tell who is who. I know the lines because I know the story so well but to a new listener it would be confusing. Mrs Bennett sounds like a 15 year old and Mr Bennett is droll and lacks any character. He is known for his sarcasm but you would never know it by listening to this. I was disappointed. I expected more from Audible.

When people think of the Holocaust, they think of Auschwitz, of Dachau; and when they think of justice for this terrible chapter in history, they think of Nuremberg. Not of Russia or the Ukraine, and certainly not a town called Kharkov. But in reality, the first war-crimes trial against the Nazis was in this idyllic, peaceful Ukrainian city, which is fitting, because it is also where the Holocaust actually began.

Narration ruins the book

This is an incredible story that I was already somewhat familiar with, especially with the recent invasion of The Ukraine by Russia. The shelling of Babyn Yar by Russia at the beginning of this invasion is so ironic with refugees fleeing to Germany for safety. Unfortunately the narration is so awful I could not finish the listen.

An Incredible Story

This is an incredible story that covers the effect of poverty, addiction and mental illness on one of the most moral and difficult questions of all time. There is no right answer as this book sadly points out. All who proclaim to be righteous and on the side of having all the answers are just as fallible as our protagonist “Jane Roe.” The documentation illustrates just how hard the author worked to finally get the story of her life straight. A true accomplishment.

I have read this novel many times but this was the first time I listened. WOW! it was just terrific. I have heard some pretty terrible southern accents but Sissy's (growing up in Texas) is just lovely and an absolute joy for the listener. I felt like I was sitting on Scout's front porch listening to the evening critters and seeing the fire flies. Atticus is not a drinker but I sure did enjoy my bourbon listening to this story just before I went to see Jeff Daniels on Broadway.

Good Story but distracting sound engineering

Who was the director?

I really enjoyed the content of this book but the narration was poor. I don't know if that is the fault of the author or the director of the reading. Jill Lepore's voice would range from a whisper that was difficult to decipher to shouting when she was reading a direct quote from someone. It was incredibly irritating because at times I had to turn the volume up to hear the whispers and the next minute turn the volume down to avoid the shouting. I will never listen to another book by this author if she persists in reading her own material. Just because she wrote it does not make her a successful narrator. Jill-stick to writing, not narration!
