Excellent book, as always

I love McWhorter's other books and this one is similarly excellent. Don't let the flashy title turn you off, this book clever, thoughtful, methodical, and respectful (and also very funny at times).

Historia
Exiled to four years in Siberia, but hailed by the end of his life as a saint, prophet, and genius, Fyodor Dostoevsky holds an exalted place among the best of the great Russian authors. One of Dostoevsky’s five major novels, Devils follows the travails of a small provincial town beset by a band of modish radicals - and in so doing presents a devastating depiction of life and politics in late 19th-century Imperial Russia.

Awesome book, outstanding reader
Revisado: 11-06-23
This is definitely the most confusing and involved book of Dostoyevsky post-exhile. However it is certainly worth a read, and the reader could not have been better! Great pacing, excellent pronunciation, and good differentiation between the characters' voices made this book a joy to listen to.

Historia
The Kingdom of God Is Within You is a nonfiction book written by Leo Tolstoy. A philosophical treatise, the book was first published in Germany in 1894 after being banned in his home country of Russia. It is the culmination of 30 years of Tolstoy's thinking and lays out a new organization for society based on a literal Christian interpretation. The Kingdom of God Is Within You is a key text for Tolstoyan nonviolent resistance and Christian anarchist movements.

Horribly read, find another version
Revisado: 08-30-23
The reader was awful. He read at a breakneck pace, slurred words, and had no intonation. Plus it's a very outdated translation.
Otherwise worth a read, but I highly recommend reading a rebuttal argument, On the Resistance of Evil by Force by Ivan Alexandrivich Ilyan, to get both sides of the argument that was raging in turn of the century Russia. Let your rational or the Spirit guide which person you agree with.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Historia
Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

Solid Book, Solid Reader
Revisado: 03-02-23
Really enjoyable story about the characters behind the Mercury program. Quaid did a good job as the reader, but took a bit to get used to. Not the most traditional style for an Audiobook reading, but it definitely fit the style of the book. Overall very interesting, engaging, and informative story about the beginning and background of the space race from the pilots' perspectives

Historia
Notes is considered by many to be one of the first existentialist novels. It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to as the "Underground Man") who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy. The second part of the book is called "Apropos of the Wet Snow" and describes certain events that appear to be destroying and sometimes renewing the Underground Man.

Historia
When you think about Christian history, you might think of the first thousand years - the events of Jesus' life, the acts of the apostles, the establishment of the church, and the various councils that established theological doctrine. But the history of Christianity from the Reformation to the present is equally dramatic and profoundly relevant. It's a story about people as much as theology - our cultures, our politics, our relationship to the world.

Excellent Content and Performance
Revisado: 10-14-22
Great Courses already have a high standard for being both interesting and informative, but this course exceeds even these standards. Dr Worthen does an outstanding job cohesively condensing an extremely broad and complex idea (the history of Christianity) into an understandable, memorable, and enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this course to any and everybody! Even if you have not listened to part 1, this course is well worth a listen.

Solid Overview of Christianity's Start
Revisado: 09-19-22
Pretty good overview of the themes and movements that shaped Christianity in it's development, especially in the late roman period. To much focus on specific theological conflicts for my taste though; I would have preferred more coverage of the development of the church hierarchy and the influence of the Saints.
