Historia
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Not what I expected but still enjoyable
Revisado: 01-24-20
I know people who have hiked various sections of the AT, especially the parts that run through my own county and neighboring counties in PA, and I've even walked very short sections myself in PA and VA. I've been to the top of mountains in VT and NH. So I enjoyed listening to the comments about the various areas he visited. I also enjoyed hearing some of the history of the AT.
Although the setting was the AT, the book struck me more as being a book about a middle aged man facing a challenge and coming to terms with his limitations while reassessing relationships to his family and his hiking partner friend. There was humor and observation of human behavior that was entertaining. I knew by the time he described buying his gear at the start of the book that there was no way he was going to hike the whole AT. That didn't matter. Listening to his journey of discovery was fun.

Historia
Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-06-20
As a chemistry professor for 29 years I thought I'd like this book but instead I found it difficult to follow. Some facts provided were interesting but overall it was not what I expected and had a hard time finishing it.

Kosher? That means the rabbi blessed it, right? Not exactly. In this captivating account of a Bible-based practice that has grown into a multibillion-dollar industry, journalist Sue Fishkoff travels throughout America and to Shanghai, China, to find out who eats kosher food, who produces it, who is responsible for its certification, and how this fascinating world continues to evolve.

Narrator horribly "butchered" some words
Revisado: 09-02-15
I enjoyed the content and narrator spoke clearly but it was obvious that he was not familiar with some of the words he needed to read. I cringed every time he read a transliterated Hebrew word the way it was spelled rather than the way it should have been pronounced.

Historia
Long before he starred on some of television’s most beloved and long-running series such as Taxi and Who’s the Boss? and went on to distinguish himself in a variety of film and stage roles, Tony Danza was a walking contradiction: an indifferent student who dreamed of being a teacher. Inspiring a classroom of students was an aspiration he put aside for decades until one day it seemed that the most meaningful thing he could do was give his dream a shot. What followed was a year spent teaching 10th-grade English at Northeast High - Philadelphia’s largest high school with 3,600 students....

HS has changed a lot since I was there
Revisado: 12-24-14
Would you listen to I'd Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had again? Why?
I enjoyed listening but probably wouldn't listen to the whole book again. There were some commentaries on the experience of teaching that I might want to go back and listen to again since I'm an educator and could related to those experiences.
What other book might you compare I'd Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had to and why?
It seemed like a cross between "Up the Down Staircase" and "Welcome Back Kotter" in the way it was presented. I had never seen the reality TV show that he speaks about in the book so to me that was just background.
Which scene was your favorite?
I was interested in the book because I attended that particular Philadelphia HS back in the late 60's. I particularly enjoyed descriptions of his experiences at locations I could imagine both inside the school and in the surrounding community which has change a lot since my teen years growing up there. In addition, the student body of the school has become much more diversified, much more like the community college where I teach, so I could relate to some of his experiences with the students and his own comments regarding how much teens have changed or remained the same.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Certainly I felt inspired when he followed through on his commitment to teaching for the whole school year.
Any additional comments?
I don't know if everyone would enjoy this as much as I did but educators might enjoy his unique perspective of life in the trenches of public education.
