Pretty standard narrative. Nothing special. Good performance from narrator

Well-paced, but very general overview of ancient Egyptian history from the beginning to Cleopatra. The intro tries to present the chapters to follow as some kind of break from traditional narratives about Egyptian history, with an eye more toward the people, whose story usually suffers at the expense of the rulers and the story of wars and conquest. It fails at that. But the telling of standard ancient Egyptian history is entertaining enough. I listened the whole way through. The narrator is great. Pleasant, clear voice, well-read.

Isn’t detailed enough to be an actually helpful primer on holiday songwriting. The most interesting new information I learned from this is what A&R stands for since I never bothered to look it up. You’ll never guess!

De Waal extends too far beyond his reach in Mama’s Last Hug. On ape behavior, animal behavior in general, specific anecdotes from life as a primatologist, the book shines. But de Waal too confidently explores beyond into socio-politics and anthropology, and his lack of expertise muddles what could be a concise treatise on animal emotion and why it should be self-evidently universal, albeit to varying degrees. I don’t ask my primatologists to relate monkeys to capitalism. Monkeys are not capitalists, and if they knew what capitalism was they probably would not like it, considering how it has catastrophically affected their habitats. I think most monkeys just want some fruit and maybe to mess around too, because that’s fun. If they work for their fruit so they can later have the freedom to mess around, that doesn’t make them capitalists; it makes them tough little dudes. Mad respect, monkeys.

The narrator did a great job. De Waal’s little message at the end was nice. Appreciated.
