Historia
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

unique storyline
Revisado: 03-23-25
I liked that the plot is not driven by romance and that the main character is not an 18yo. The characters were so fun and well developed. The concept of Ivy House and all the different mythical creatures felt unique. The voice actor did a great job with the different accents, really brought the characters to life. Great monologs and dialogs - I laughed out loud so many times! My only complaint is that it is a long series (and still going) and I won't be able to afford to pay for all the books individually in order to finish the series. Maybe someday!

Magic doesn’t interest Annie Mason. Not after it stole her future. She’s on the island only to settle her late father’s estate and, hopefully, reconnect with her long-absent best friend, Beatrice, who fled their dreary lives for a more glamorous one. Yet Crow Island is brimming with temptation, and the most mesmerizing may be her enigmatic new neighbor.

Good author & narrators
Revisado: 02-11-25
I think she's a good author. It was well written with creative and descriptive analogies and all that. The female voice actors were fantastic and the male was good but sometimes hard to understand. I just felt like there wasn't enough going on with the plot. Very character driven which is great but none of the main characters were very likeable.

Historia
When Colorado elementary school teacher Ophelia Brody decides to ditch her divorced family for a Christmas in the sunshine state with her college roommate, she doesn't expect a mile-high meet cute to tailspin the entire trip. Frankie Casado is cocky, presumptuous, shameless—and just the right distraction from her depressing, fruitless dating life back home for a few weeks. It just so happens the retired fighter pilot is in somewhat of a rut of his own, and the circumstances around their coincidental meeting and unavoidable physical attraction are the perfect excuse for a festive fling.

Fun to listen to
Revisado: 01-14-25
Romances are often predictable and this one wasn't an exception, but it did manage to catch me off guard and make me LOL. I enjoyed the author's writing style, definitely not too cheesy. Characters were likeable. I thought the voice actors did a good job. Looking forward to the sequel.

Great holiday listen! Fun, feel-good, funny, and with enough twists that hopefully at least one of them will surprise you. The author did a good job writing the characters in such a way that I felt like I was there wanting to add my two cents to their conversations 😆

Recounting her experiences with sexist discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual violence - beginning in childhood, through the present - Woods lays out clear and unflinching personal vignettes that build in intensity as the number of times grows. Individually, and especially taken as a whole, these stories amount to powerful proof that sexual violence and discrimination are never just one-time occurrences, but part of a constant battle all women face every day.

The Nine follows the true story of the author’s great aunt Hélène Podliasky, who led a band of nine female resistance fighters as they escaped a German forced labor camp and made a 10-day journey across the front lines of World War II from Germany back to Paris. Drawing on incredible research, this powerful, heart-stopping narrative is a moving tribute to the power of humanity and friendship in the darkest of times.

An incredible story of triumph in the face of adversity
Revisado: 12-04-23
The voice actor did a great job with the different languages! The author wrote a moving, immersive story that made me feel love, strength, and sisterhood in the face of horror, injustice, and suffering. Pay attention as you listen, because there are many different characters and it may be difficult to keep track of everyone. Also, the story mostly moves in one direction but it jumps around a bit, especially as each woman's backstory is introduced. Filtered in with the story are mentions of the author's discoveries and other modern day anecdotes. It makes for good storytelling. These nine women were truly brave and admirable. Thank you for sharing their story.

I enjoyed listening to this short story. I did not find it to be predictable until the end. The cast was great! Definitely gave me Halloween vibes which was perfect for an October listen.

Enjoyable twist on the classic switched twin tale
Revisado: 10-18-23
Good and evil are rarely black and white. This is a great look inside how good people can do bad things, and people aren't always who they say they are. I enjoyed the different perspectives and guessing what would happen next. I found the characters to be likeable--that or I loved to hate them. I thought it moved at a good pace to give us time to get all the information required and to really experience what it is like to try to take over someone else's identity undetected. Really fun story. Definitely recommend!

The book of hindsight... and so much more!
Revisado: 10-18-23
I didn't expect to love this book so much. For the most part, it kept me guessing till the end, and I found the characters to be likeable and more relatable than I had originally anticipated. I especially enjoyed listening to it a second time through. The book of hindsight... in hindsight. I loved picking up on the hints that I had missed the first time around.
Moving backwards in time might seem cliché or overdone, but it was clever here. Who wouldn't want to go back to previous days in their life to see what they might have missed, or just enjoy reliving moments that they'll ordinarily never get back?
There were only a couple questions I still had at the end that weren't technically pivotal to the plot but I won't spoil anything here. Check it out for yourself!

TJR has won me over again
Revisado: 08-15-23
I listened to Daisy Jones and the Six and ended up loving it intensely, so much more than I thought I was going to. So, I listened to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and that one made me care deeply about characters who I wasn't even sure I liked. Now TJR has won me over again with Malibu Rising. The characters are anything but simple, and I enjoyed rooting for them and hearing everyone's inner thoughts. I liked the flashbacks that added so much depth to the story (which otherwise only takes place across a 24-hour time period). I'm impressed by TJR's ability to make me feel all of the love and vindication, the loss and heartbreak, despite the foreshadowing that sometimes feels like spoilers. Narration was great!
