I wish everyone would read this.
Revisado: 11-26-19
Ansary vividly describes the traditional Afghanistan before complex events destroyed it, as well as contemporary history. I was moved in many ways. The chapter in which he talks about the ways that our memories keep a person “alive” and how we may come to know someone even more deeply after their death moved me to buy a copy of the book so I can share that.

Historia
In East Prussia, January 1945, the German forces are in retreat, and the Red Army is approaching. The von Globig family's manor house, the Georgenhof, is falling into disrepair. Auntie runs the estate as best she can since Eberhard von Globig, a special officer in the German army, went to war, leaving behind his beautiful but vague wife, Katharina, and her bookish 12-year-old son, Peter. As the road fills with Germans fleeing the occupied territories, the Georgenhof begins to receive strange visitors - a Nazi violinist, a dissident painter, a Baltic baron, even a Jewish refugee.

All for Nothing
Revisado: 03-16-19
The characters and scenes are vivid with detail. There is both horror and humor as you are plunged into the chaos that overtook ordinary people’s lives at the end of the war. I think it is a masterpiece.

After visiting her aunt and cousins, Kambili dreams of being part of a loving family.

Cultural insight in compelling story
Revisado: 07-04-18
The characters are well developed and we gain an understanding of issues facing upper middle-class people in a society struggling with corruption. Also a sad look at how Catholicism can lead to excesses. The story includes some African language. The reader must be a native speaker because she pronounces it fluently and I am very glad that I listen to this book.

Historia
At a time when the edge of American settlement barely reached beyond the Appalachian Mountains, two visionaries, President Thomas Jefferson and millionaire John Jacob Astor, foresaw that one day the Pacific would dominate world trade as much as the Atlantic did in their day. Just two years after the Lewis and Clark expedition concluded in 1806, Jefferson and Astor turned their sights westward once again. Thus began one of history's dramatic but largely forgotten turning points in the conquest of the North American continent.

Painful
Revisado: 01-07-18
It’s not the first time to read descriptions of the horrific cruelty of slavery, but one cringes at the vivid descriptions. Interesting poetic license cresting an actual Underground Railroad. Willful suspension of disbelief required.

Where's the Happiness?
Revisado: 09-14-17
Would you try another book from Arundhati Roy and/or Arundhati Roy?
I respect the deep knowledge that Ms Roy has of all the miseries the people in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have suffered, but I finally didn't want to hear any more graphic descriptions of the many ways we humans make our fellows suffer. The plot was not compelling enough of a thread to keep me going. Shouldn't it be "Ministry of Utmost Misery"?
What was most disappointing about Arundhati Roy’s story?
The history of violence is the main thing; plot is meager and sometimes confusing.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
It was charming to hear Ms Roy read, but sometimes difficult to understand.
Was The Ministry of Utmost Happiness worth the listening time?
I didn't finish.
Any additional comments?
I'm not sorry that I listened to part of the book

Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.
