Historia
Centuries from now, the basic right to expand human intelligence beyond its natural limits has become a war-worthy cause for the Demarchists and Conjoiners. Only vast lighthugger starships bind these squabbling colonies together, manned by the panicky and paranoid Ultras. And the hyperpigs just try to keep their heads down. The rich get richer. And everyone tries not to think about the worrying number of extinct alien civilizations turning up on the outer reaches of settled space...because who's to say that humanity won't be next?

Increadible exploration
Revisado: 01-03-18
The variety of character setting and story exhibited in this work makes for a truly engaging listen. Every story maintains a good pace, pulling you onward and deeper into the universe. Though vast Alastair Reynolds universe remains bound together by fine threads of character experience, and those are the stories he tells with such increadible fidelity. The narration brings these stories to life and keeps them humming with tension. Fantastic listen.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Extremely thorough recounting
Revisado: 09-22-17
As much a story as a historic documentation of events. The author goes on great tangential explorations of characters' personal histories, backgrounds and psychological profiles. These journeys seem unimportant at the outset, but as the book progresses it all ties back together. It is a well crafted book which holds back no graphic or miserable detail. An epic story, you feel the strain and hopelessness of the crew's every situation. You experience the raw crushing power of the arctic, and marvel at the resilience of those who sought to escape it's frozen grasp.

Real characters and good narration make this book.
Revisado: 05-10-16
This story feels real from the get go. Characters with consistent problems, emotional instabilities and believable motivations. Though it gets a little cliché towards the very end it's well worth the listen. The narrator maintains a rather somber tone throughout which isn't something I overly enjoy, but it matches the character.

A Story lost in complexity
Revisado: 04-14-16
This story starts very strong, an interesting turn of events that casts the main character abroad in space and time. unfortunately it only uses this idea as a spring board to get to the real story which is far more complex, but less coherent. an interesting world, which is explored only in passing while debating theories with less interesting results.
I liked the story overall, and the narrator does a good job of capturing the characters constant disgruntled demeanor. I just wish the ending was a bit stronger.

Fantastic breadth of story
Revisado: 04-06-16
Strong voices lend depth to unique and off the beaten path stories and characters. While you won't like every story there will be some you will connect with deeply, some that will surprise you, and others which will challange your established convictions on genre. Fantastic work all around. if you're looking for a taste of the Sci-fi writing frontier, take a leap!

Overwhelming Scale, underwhelming politics
Revisado: 02-12-16
This story spans incomprehensible distances, vast stretches of time and explores interactions with unfamiliar and foreign intelligences. The core of the story however is not so grand. Instead, a large portion of the story deals with a political power struggle between two women and the groups that support them. Though there are very Sci-fi elements added to these themes, it still remains very much a grudge match between these two leaders.
Often times the story gets bogged down in political dealings and makes the progression sluggish meaning it only flows well at the beginning and the end. The narrator does a decent job, but with the number of characters and accents characters often blur together in your head.
Overall I liked the story and recommend it if you're a fan of big ideas, or if you like political struggle.

Power without control
Revisado: 08-27-15
It's hard to separate this book from the film, but it's worth trying.
The film does a great job of removing unnecessary elements found in the book. It refines and simplifies some of the encounters, and much of the theoretical dialog spouted by Dr. Malcom.
The book fully explores these theories of chaos and humanities lack of self-control when it comes to scientific experimentation. It demonstrates the implications these have for human-kind as we wield this incredible power. The book makes you understand the power of nature, and ultimately does a better job imparting this message than the film.
The characters and world remain similarly intact and distinct in both tellings of this tale. The little girl is perhaps even more useless in the book and Hammond is even more blind and stubborn. His character is also often used clumsily to springboard into more of Dr. Malcolm's rants.
Overall a brilliant voice acting job and a great story. Definitely worth the listen!

Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

Not always true, but always real.
Revisado: 04-27-15
A complex and intense view of Vietnam. How it was versus what really happened. The constantly shifting edges bringing a sense of dark reality to every story and action. An overwhelming feeling of depression and fear, and the constant struggle to pretend they don't exist. In limbo somewhere between a memory and present day reflections. You have to read it/listen to it to understand the message. But it's worth it.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

More heart than Starship Troopers
Revisado: 04-24-15
In the same vein of Starship Troopers, with soldiers thrust deep amongst the stars. Yet Old Man's War remains a more personal, more intimate story. Written with a true understanding of the age and perspective of the main character, the story is charted in a believable and realistic way. The emotions are truly well communicated through the writing and given great impact through the narration. An excellent combination of skills. Well worth the read/listen if you enjoy this genre.

A good listen
Revisado: 03-30-15
If you have listened or read Dan Brown novels before you will get exactly what you expect, and that's not a bad thing. Lots of twists and turns, a nice interplay of shifting character perspectives, high stakes and high energy. A good listen that doesn't take too much brain power to keep track of! Definitely worth the listen if you like this style!
