I’m on my fourth or fifth listen of this book in November 2024 after reading the book when it first came out. Excellent stories about doing what’s right even when it’s challenging. Highly recommend anything by Ryan Holliday.

I'm a big fan of Da Vinci and a big fan of Walter Isaacson.

This book offers an extraordinarily deep dive into all aspects of Leonardo's life and works. I intend to revisit this book again and again in the future. A must-read for fans of Leonardo, Isaacson or anyone who works in creative fields or science.

A thorough look at a dysfunctional White House

I got it on audible two days ago and just finished. So much was discussed on social media before its release that I felt like I’d heard most of it before. With that said, here are some things that stood out to me.

It paints trump as exceptionally thin-skinned with no desire to learn about new things or accept expert advice.

Not because he’s shaking up Washington or because he’s concentrating on more important things but because he’s a narcissist and intellectually lazy.

Not exactly surprising if you've followed Trump in business, as the star of a reality show, as a candidate or as President for the last year.

Most of the book focuses on the people around Trump and their experiences working with him and vying for - and attempting to keep - his attention.

It’s not exceptionally trashy or gossipy - as I've heard many outlets suggest - but not really groundbreaking either.

It confirmed things I already suspected of Trump based on his own behavior and accounts from a variety of other sources. There are a variety of unique stories from the perspectives of people like Bannon, Jervanka, The Mooch, Spicer, Roger Ailes, and crew. These offer an interesting behind-the-scenes glimpse into the in-fighting and power struggle in the White House.

Ultimately, I’m left with the following...

The President is portrayed as an intellectually lazy child prone to freak outs when his ego is bruised and he’s surrounded himself with a bunch of backstabbing opportunistic turds who are spending more of their time competing for his attention and approval than doing their jobs.

It also left me thinking that Bannon is not the evil genius Svengali he’s made out to be but more of a moderately clever internet troll with a delusional worldview who managed to be in the right place at the right time.

In a strange way, I ALMOST feel sorry for Trump. I definitely wasn’t expecting that. But he comes off as a pathetically insecure man who ran for President as a PR stunt, wound up being the dog who caught the car and now has no idea how to live with it or all the responsibilities and critical attention that comes with it.

If that sort of thing is worthwhile to you or you’d just like to read it cause Trump is screaming about how you shouldn’t, I’d say buy it.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. It’s an interesting take and worth reading but somewhat unremarkable. If Trump had just shut up about it, I think it would’ve passed like a fart in the wind. But his freak outs seem to have had the opposite of the intended effect, will lead to loads more copies being sold and the media covering it for weeks or even months when it probably doesn’t deserve that level the attention.

Wish I Read This 25 Years Ago

I've been a fan of self-help and psychology books for a long time. I learned a lot of the lessons in this book from an old baseball coach when I was 13 or 14. I took a lot of those lessons from baseball and taught myself (with help) how to play guitar, how to build websites and code, how to start a business, and even soft skills like how to be more persuasive.

I heard about this book from the Freakonomics podcast and being a fan of Gladwell's Outliers and Dan Coyle's The Talent Code, I added it to my wish list.

This book is an essential piece for anyone that's working consistently to get better at a skill. Entrepreneurs, teachers, musicians, athletes and tech people will definitely find it valuable.

I'm sure I'll go back and listen to it at least a dozen times.

Always Worth Buying Gary's Audiobooks

Revisado: 03-20-16

Disclaimer: I love Gary V. Saw him speak at SXSW in 2010 and he changed the way I think about a lot of things.

The book is a collection of Q&A style advice based on the Ask Gary Vee Show.

There's volumes of useful information on business in general, biz dev, marketing, entrepreneurship, social media, mindset and a ton more.

The content alone - and the sheer volume of things you can learn and apply - make this book worth buying and rereading a couple of times.

But in the audiobooks, Gary always narrates and goes off script. A lot of times, the off-script takes make the audiobook more valuable then the physical book.

He describes how his opinion has changed in certain topics from the time of the original show, the writing of the book and the recording of the audiobook.

I couldn't recommend this book more. Buy it.

I was familiar with Derek's company CD Baby but not with his story. I listened to his two episodes on Tim Ferriss' podcast which is what lead me to his book. It was exactly the perspective I needed.

If you're an entrepreneur and passionate about music, learning and/or unconventional management techniques, this book is definitely worth listening to.

Lots of great ideas for anyone that manages people, works in a creative field or manages creative projects.

Told against the backdrop of Pixar makes it even more fascinating.
