Historia
Drawing on period letters and chronicles, and on the papers of the Virginia Company - which financed the settlement of Jamestown - David Price tells a tale of cowardice and courage, stupidity and brilliance, tragedy and costly triumph. He takes us into the day-to-day existence of the English men and women whose charge was to find gold and a route to the Orient, and who found, instead, hardship and wretched misery. Death, in fact, became the settlers' most faithful companion, and their infighting was ceaseless.

Very nice refresher on Jamestown
Revisado: 11-17-23
Very enjoyable retelling of the Jamestown story. Appreciated the linkages to Plymouth settlement several years later.
As usual, I wish I’d had access to visuals like maps to follow the events better.

Historia
Did you know that Plymouth was named by the explorer John Smith in 1608? Twelve years later, in 1620, the Pilgrims started their journey from Plymouth, England, and were blown off course, landing in Plymouth, North America. As if it was a sign from God, the Pilgrims decided not to continue their journey but to settle right where they landed, starting one of the earliest American communities.

Very helpful in recapping the major events in 1600s New England from a European perspective. Need other books to fill in the details, and to provide other viewpoints. Narrator was fine. An easy and worthwhile listen.

Historia
Was America founded on the auction block in Jamestown in 1619 or aboard the Mayflower in 1620? The controversy erupted in August 2019 when the New York Times announced its 1619 Project. The Times set to transform history by asserting that all the laws, material gains, and cultural achievements of Americans are rooted in the exploitation of African Americans. Historians have pushed back, saying that the 1619 Project conjures a false narrative out of racial grievance.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Entertaining and well-paced for 8.5 hours
Revisado: 02-23-18
Would you listen to Artemis again? Why?
Weir's descriptions of lunar habitation technology, 50 years into the future. I learned something about the economics of mineral extraction from the lunar regolith.
It would be nice to see the author's conceptions of what some of these vehicles and structures might look like. If the book has illustrations then I'd like to check them out sometime.
Would you recommend Artemis to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book to someone who could tolerate the non-stop profanity. The vulgar verbal exchanges wore on me after a few hours. And the narrator seemed to relish the vulgar dialog. I suppose I was expecting a little more refinement from these characters in the late 21st century.
Also, there was some social commentary and alternative lifestyle choices that might put some folks off. I don't need to be reminded of someone's sexual orientation every time they appear in the story.
Have you listened to any of Rosario Dawson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but Rosario is very talented and versatile. I particularly liked her voicing of Jazz's father, a middle-aged and weary man from the middle east. I would listen to her again.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, if I had a large block of time, but I had to spread my listening across several commutes.
Any additional comments?
An enjoyable listen, although I found the protagonist hard to relate to. Jazz was snarky, reckless, and at times almost superhuman. Although she certainly had some redeeming features too.
The main story is about industrial sabotage in the resource extraction industry. That might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

James Gleick has long been fascinated by the making of science: how ideas order visible appearances, how equations can give meaning to molecular and stellar phenomena, how theories can transform what we see. In Chaos, he chronicled the emergence of a new way of looking at dynamic systems; in Genius, he portrayed the wondrous dimensions of Richard Feymnan's mind.

Not much personal material. I would have liked an attempt to reconcile his many passions: optics, gravity, mechanics, religion, coinage, governance (royal society) et al. Illustrations would have helped. overall, I would recommend this title.

One of the most significant books ever written by a head of state, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions - a cornerstone of Western thought.

Good memoir for fans of 70's, some wisdom for students
Revisado: 12-15-15
Burt seems to have 2 main aims here: nostalgia for the older fans, and wisdom for aspiring actors. He seems very sincere on both counts.
Burt shares his views on selected events and people in his life. His narration was emotional, he often mumbles, and the paper shuffling is distracting. But he wasn't trying for an Audie award here and most fans won't mind.
This is not a biography of any kind, so don't expect fairness & balance & comprehensiveness & great introspection.
There's a fair amount of name dropping. Was Burt really great pals with Bette Davis, Mae West and many other Hollywood old timers?
It's hard to reconcile the brash leading man from the 70's with the man reading this book. But he admitted his early insecurities and how he hid behind the cocky facade in his prime. He regrets the poor career choices- he made 100 movies and he's proud of about 5. He also discarded some good girl friends along the way and you suspect it was mainly his cad-ishness at fault.
But I like Burt and this is a good nostalgia trip for those over 50, and maybe a good reference for students.
Note- I think Burt did himself a disservice by extending an olive branch to Donald Trump after criticizing him about the USFL. Trump is currently a leading Presidential candidate and it sounded purely ingratiating.
