Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Tender, gut-wrenching, impossibly sad
Revisado: 07-06-22
fFrst of all, I would listen to Donald Sutherland read the phone book.
I don't need to tell anyone here that Hemingway is one of the all-time greats, but I've always found this story to be his most gentle, most kind and, as I'm getting older, his saddest of stories. There were a few days that I just couldn't bear to turn it on, so it took longer to finish than it might have. Ultimately, it's a recording that I'm sure I'll listen to again.

perfect preparation for upcoming travel!
Revisado: 06-24-22
maybe it seems like overkill to want my tutoring in Spanish history to begin with the prehistoric age, but that ihistory set a beautiful foundation for the lectures to come, culminating in 2017. I feel like this gives me a great understanding of contemporary Spain for an upcoming trip.

Historia
A magnificent portrayal of 1890's America and the harsh realities of a dog-eat-dog world, Sister Carrie lies at the forefront of American Naturalism. When poor young provincial woman Carrie Meeber arrives in Chicago, she little expects to be catapulted from lower-class woman to prominent Broadway actress. Passive and yielding, she lets circumstances coerce her into action and by good fortune she arrives at fame. It is in Chicago that Carrie meets a successful businessman, Hurstwood, who helps her establish her name.

The greatest American novel beautifully read
Revisado: 12-02-20
I have read this book several times in the last 30 years--undergrad, grad school and for pleasure ( protip: do not assign a 600-page book for a casual book club unless you are prepared to recap the story and detail its many merits for the entire session). No story is more truly and tragically American. Nothing about the production or narration bothered me (which may not seem like a ringing endorsement, but a narrator who doesn't get in the way of the story is absolutely essential to my enjoyment and recommendation.

Robert K. Massie returns with another masterpiece of narrative biography, the extraordinary story of an obscure German princess who became Catherine the Great. Born into a minor noble family, Catherine transformed herself into empress of Russia by sheer determination. For thirty-four years, the government, foreign policy, cultural development, and welfare of the Russian people were in her hands.

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?

Compelling
Revisado: 05-26-17
Listening at 1.5 x speed is a game changer (how did I not realize this until halfway through Anna Karenina??).Compelling. I looked forward to my commute so I could hear more. He presents a satisfying, science-based narrative of the known and speculated history of our species from the very earliest societies (beginning 70,000 years ago) but is neither overly optimistic nor pessimistic. The story is broken down by revolution- cognitive, political or social, industrial and scientific. Personally, I enjoyed the cognitive section best--the imagination being what truly separates homo sapiens from any other creature on earth. Ends with an examination of the history of happiness, which was the least interesting part of the book, but still insightful. Strongly recommend.

Historia
This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon.

certainly the best novel ever written
Revisado: 03-08-17
now that I have a big commute to work, I've decided to check in with Audible and listen to all the great novels that I never read in high school but probably should have. This is one that I am so glad I never read until my mid-forties! Unbelievably rich full of absolutely every story imaginable. A high schooler would not have any sort of context to make sense out of it. But it's truly a masterful work of beauty.
