Historia
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

terrifying in a way I've never experienced in a book. so many seemingly abstract, yet, applicabl philosophical observations. Things that resonate with our personal lives, as well as within the lives of the characters.

bolster your psychological defenses
Revisado: 02-25-22
A book this extreme is inevitably going to be divisive. I'm in the camp that loves the book. That being said, I believe my fondness is minimally tied to the plot and characters, like it would be with other stories; rather, it's an appreciation of the precise tone. It's consistent, despite being so unique. I think this is what allows one to be immersed in such a cringeworthy world that is otherwise unfamiliar (hopefully).
I enjoyed the movie, as well, but it doesn't tell the same story. It's length isnt sufficient to depict all the starkly contrasting sections of the extreme acts of violence/cruelty, and narcistic yuppie lifestyle-- with it's repetetition, and obsessive accounts of designer clothing, restaurant reservations, and material posessions. Only the book causes the reader to struggle to discern fantasy from reality.
...Also, the fact that Patrick, a hedonistic serial killer, idolizes Donald Trump and his lifestyle is hilarious!

Historia
Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene - it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology.Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society.

only problem: the performer fails to make voices appropriate for characters.
Schizophrenic writing style can be difficult to read, but strangely enough, that adds to the trippy tone of the environment. it complements all the drug use and cyberspace/virtual reality.
genre defining, innovative, surreal, bleak, chaotic.

Damn near perfect
Revisado: 07-09-21
Mark Cain's characters are all so multi-faceted-- and unique. Despite there being so many unique characters, their choices and dialog consistently remain true to their identity. Because of this, I find myself being highly invested in the characters --a seldom occurrence in the majority of fantasy. Michael Gilboe's superb narration further makes the characters come to life. Each one has their own voice (except Peter/Andrew-- who only differ slightly since they're brothers), all of which are what I imagine they would sound like in real life.
Cain and Gilboe-- PLEASE don't stop writing/narrating the series!

Here in one laugh-out-loud volume is the life of Beezy, Satan's BFF, and one of the most popular characters in the Circles in Hell universe. Creative storytelling-but eventually loses novelty
Revisado: 07-05-21
I felt the last 1/3rd really seemed to drag. Before that, I found it to be excellent. It was enjoyable to hear biblical/historical events told through characters we know, who are essentially behind the scenes (albeit involved).

Solid conclusion to a solid trilogy
Revisado: 12-23-20
Great characters, and a satisfying conclusion to a 3 book plot-arc. Only criticism: the antagonist's ending seemed a bit like an easy-way-out. But perhaps it was necessary to regain then less "supernatural-footing" which began the trilogy-- and thus brought closure to the overall plot by bringing it full-circle. Some people are critical of Bill Hodges as a character-- finding him flat. Although he is less unique than others in the story, he keeps the series grounded, and provides a realistic contrast to the other characters and supernatural plot development. I enjoy him. Will Patton on audio adds a realistic dimension to the characters which, I believe, makes makes listening to the audio-book more enjoyable than reading the text.

Historia
A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far - a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes. "Wake up, genius." So begins King's instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades.
