Ms Hillerman is allowing people to influence her in unhelpful ways.
It’s very cool in theory to have a tribal person narrate the story of largely tribal characters. A culture rich with storytelling history must have talented storytellers. Ms. Studi is not there yet. I wish her well in her journey, but she needs to develop her skills. One of those skills is pronunciation of specialized words in a natural way, not this breath-holding, backing up and taking a running jump at every Navajo or local term… including the first three passes at Toadlena!
Having a dialect or language specialist is helpful, but you need to have them help the narrator use their expertise. Did they even meet?
Also, not for nothing, but portions of this book still needed attention. They reminded me of some of the mistakes made by Tony in his first book. Anne, you’ve shown us that you can do this. Don’t allow people to publish before you’re done crafting!

I am a fan of Mr. Gaiman’s. His books, “American Gods,” “Anansi Boys,” and “Stardust” were already in my library, the first two in both hardback and in audio formats. I’d come to trust him to deliver a good story. That promise is kept in “The Graveyard Book.”

I suspect Neil was a lonely child. His relationship with the natural world, both realistic and detailed, and magical and shimmering with promise, bespeaks early wandering days in woods and fields. That is the background of this book. He creates a natural world, cloaked in darkness and shadow, but warm and welcoming and nurturing. He writes a world where the night is velvet dark and can be drawn around you like a cloak.

This is not how this story begins, however. In stark contrast, we start the book in the company of the pristinely sharpened, efficiently bloodied knife near the completion of its task of leaving a family home lifeless. In sharp contrast (my apologies), the darling family baby, a wanderer wakened by oddly muffled sounds, takes to wandering. Up and out of his crib, down the stairs on his diaper-padded bottom, pacifier in mouth, and out the open front door. If you’ve ever had a wanderer, you know this is an entirely likely scenario. If you have not, believe me, it is very realistic.

And so begins a tale of good and evil, of deep magic, ancient rituals and traditions brought to enchant our lives with wonder and pondering. The baby, adopted by the ghosts of the nearby graveyard, grows up “Nobody Owens,” aka “Bod.”

Through him we experience the love of dedicated ghostly parents, the wisdom of an ancient vampire guardian. Bod has a village of ghosts for playmates and tutors, a sassy witch as a first crush, and a werewolf as a detested babysitter/heroine.
Through him, we learn to appreciate the magic in our own world. Outside of him, we learn to be sharply aware of the name “Jack.”

Gaiman’s writing is a joy both to read and to listen to. He makes an excellent reader of his own books. The warmth in his voice is evidence of his warm regard for his characters. His delight in describing his natural world shows his delight in the world around him. He gives his characters consistently varied voices and dialects, so they are easily identified. His sense of the dramatic pause is pristine.

I am not alone in my admiration for this work. It has won Neil a raft of awards, spent startlingly long amounts of time on bestseller lists, and been glowingly reviewed by all the big names. For me, it has become the book I listen to when nothing else will do. It cheers me up, stands me on my feet, strengthens my resolve, and makes me feel like a literary genius just for enjoying it. I hope it does the same for you.

This was the first time I’ve heard Elizabeth Smart say she was survival-oriented during her devastating ordeal. I know it takes years to process anything like this. I know it takes hard hard work to understand our own processes and thinking, both in the moment-to-moment past and in the moment-to-moment present in relation to that past.
These few words of sheer clear thinking on the part of a fourteen year old and a 21 year old renews my confidence in the ongoing brilliance of each generation.
Her outreach work toward others who have been victimized warms my heart. Thank you, Elizabeth, for distilling some of Heaven’s grace from your suffering.
I love the work of these podcasters. Their banter and clarity, their sheer skills in the storytelling genre have allowed me to learn from the horrors they have reported.
I am sorry I am such a new fan that I don’t know your names off the top of my head yet. I have already listened to over twenty hours of your podcasts, but your stories have captured my imagination and left me bereft of your names. However, I’d know your wonderful voices anywhere. I can hear them now... off I go to chase more bad guys with you in the lead!

I loved the format and the perspectives, the incredible writing. The fabulous characters, trapped by their perspectives and loves, devastated me with their hopes and dreams and how bound they were.
Jesse Eisenberg is a brilliant soul, and has created a masterpiece.

This is. This was. I mean. Wow. I’m holding back tears but I’m going to replay. The book came and went as fast as Lana. Lana didn’t leave us. But this. This is deeper than the albums. I don’t know I feel like an era in my life has just been sealed off and I wanna scream Lana DONT leave me. I don’t know how to say it. Or if she will ever know. I’m writing this from my moms audible. But me? I’m 23 and Lana helped raise me. I don’t want that to be taken on, but. She helped me find me. She was always there. I knew her. She knows me. But doesn’t know I exist. Parts of her I heard in here, are what plagued me. What brought me up. We have parts of eachother, but still separate beings. Never crossed paths. But we are an archetype that I can’t put my finger on. People like me need her. Her words. Her image. Something that actually helps up belong. Not to run her path. I ran my own destruction thank you very much lol. My ears are ringing. Just the left one actually.

Wow look who is rambling
Okay so this poetry is amazing. And I heard more Lana here than I ever have. Maybe more of her roots. Thank you Elizabeth, Lizzy, Lana, Sparkle, Lavender, Sunshine, Dear Last Girl On Earth. You made my room feel like a whole house. I really can’t express this properly. Thank you.
Read this book. Listen to it. Dive in please.

These characters flash and sparkle and captivate. This story winds and turns and comes in fierce and fresh for a landing. I am keeping an eye peeled for Lindsay Joelle. I want more of this.
